Your BMW is equipped with brake pad wear sensors. This is the most likely cause of the lights coming on. To be sure why the lights are coming on, the computer system should be scanned to retrieve fault codes to see why your computer system has turned these lights on. I seriously doubt that the tension cord used during the towing process has anything to do with it other than the rare coincidence that the computer started to report the malfunction shortly after having your vehicle towed.
A reset of the warning light should have been done by your mechanic. if they did not do this or failed to do this even without your requiring it, then I would look for a new bmw mechanic. They know better than to let you take the car without checking all the warning lights especially after installing a new battery. i hope this helps, it is an easy fix for them, one that you should have not been worried about.
