I have Montero LS 95. I do recall going on very sharp uphill on automatic transmission and the car almost died and I had to push on the gas to make it move and because I did not know that you can use manual transmission. The A/T red light start coming on and when it comes on I lose pulling power. Ever since that trip, i still have the A/T light comes on when I drive the car for long time (when the car is warmed up 10-30 miles) and i don't know how to resolve this problem. I went to AT specialist and they did diagnostic service on it and all of them said everything looks fine. I still have this A/T red light problem ever since that trip and it keeps coming when the car is warm (driving for 10-30 miles). When I turn the engine off, the A/T light goes off but comes on again after 3-4 miles of driving What do you think i should do to get rid of the A/T light from coming on? I forgot to mention one thing: I lose pulling power when the car comes to full stop and i have to shift to a second gear to get the car moving. Any suggestions. Some said it could be the speed sensor?!! Please help
Something in the transmission was damaged or broken going up that very sharp hill, when it almost died. The A/T light flashing is the vehicle's computer has sensed something malfunctioning, and is flashing because of that..It has a diagnostic trouble code stored in it.More than likely, the trans is going to have to come out to be repaired.I would remove the trans pan first.Relatively easy to do,and if inside the pan there are chunks or sizeable pieces of metal, then there is definitely damage internally.

generally they play up under load like going uphill in top gear. Put some load on then try pulling away up hill in top gear, if smooth uptake then they are ok. Or remove and hv tested at auto electrican. cheers
Is it a manual shift? If so you may need more clutch fluid. If automatic make sure you have enough brake fluid so you're able to put car in gear. Also make sure you have enough transmission fluid. As for the both feet on the accelerator....sounds like you need a new fuel line. Also make sure there is no water or sediments in gas tank.Try gas treatment to help with that.If you do end up having a transmission problem replacing it will be costly and you might as well just sell her and get another vehicle.Good Luck!
Check the 'U' joints in the drive line. Check the engine/transmission mounts for damage or looseness. The real enigma is trying to determine if this is an engine or a chassis problem. If the check engine light is on, doing a scan of the computer should show engine problems. If no light, concentrate on anything in the chassis for periodic binding. Good luck!
Most likely you have a misfire, I'd be surprised if it didnt turn on the check engine light. It may be a coil or sparkplg problem.
Do this this. With your foot on the brake hard and the ebrake on put the car in gear and rev the car up a bit. What your doing is putting a load on the engine to see if it shutters. If it does it points to a coil issue usually or it just may be time plugs and wires
Do all the warning lights in the instrument cluster come on when you turn the key? If Yes, then you need to check the neutral safety switch on the side the transmission[Automatic in your Montero?], as these are a known failure part for higher mile Monteros. You lose power to the starter solenoid as a result of the switch contacts going bad. Have someone put a test light on the solenoid wire at the starter motor, while you or a friend carefully tries to start the engine. If the circuit is working correctly, you'd see the test light turn on brightly. I'm betting you'll see no light, since I suspect the switch isn't letting power through.
