You do not need to replace the instrument cluster! The fix for this is a pack of resistors that you can buy for $1.00 or less. Take the cluster right out and you'll see 4 resistors in the upper-right area on the back of the cluster. You can probably pick them off with your finger, they'll be so worn out. Once those are off, solder new ones on (carefully, don't burn your circuit board) and reassemble the dash board.
I fixed the odometer/gear selector light on my 2001 Century this way and there are videos on youtube that will walk you through the whole process.
More than likely it sounds like the lcd is bad and needs to be replaced, from what i understand if you take it to the dealer they will pull the miles from either your engine or from the eeprom from your cluster and then order you a refurbished one and set the proper mileage on it. I think i was quoted about 300 for parts and about 80 dollars for 1 hour worth of labor.
Hit the dashboard a few times really hard and it will come back on ... for a while.

you will need the instrument cluster replaced. there are several companies that rebuild them, take it to a qualified repair shop, I'm sure they have a place they deal with to repair these. you will need to send yours in, as they usually want the old one first, to program mileage.

does your car have a dash ilumintor dimmer switch on the dash this may have inadvetently got moved. it may be near your headlight adjust for when you are carrying loads in the trunk nad need to dip them. some time when cleaning the dash these get adjusted.

Odometer and Gear light out
I have the same problem. Odometer does not read?
odomtere not on to see mileage and what gear, shifter is in
I am having the same problem with my 2000 Buick Century.
I have the same problem, then I could push in the device to change from trip to odometer, and it would work long enogh to get a reading, then later that did not work, but I found tht I could twist the stem of what I pushed in, and it would come on long enough to get a reading, now there is no light to come on for it, and I notce my low tire light no longer works.
yes, the odometer is digital and will not light so it can be read along with the gear shift indicator
My odometer used to just go dark now and then, then I could make it come on by pushing the trip / mileage button. Now I can't make it come on at all, same for gearshift indicator.
I have a 2001 Buick Regal with over 110K miles on it. About 6 mounts ago the odometer/gear display started to dim. Now it is dark and can no longer be read. Also, the Fuel Gauge is unreliable when the tank gets below about 1/8 full.
What do you think are the causes of these problems and who, other than Buick, is an inexpensive source for any parts I may need?
Thank you,
Leo
