My rear driver's side door stopped opening all of a sudden. i tried opening it from the outside, thinking that the child safety lock was somehow engaged, but it was a no-go. the lock on the inside of the door still jumps slightly when i hit the unlock button on the keyfob or the buttons on the 2 front door armrests, but the door itself will not open. the handle doesn't seem to be catching. i partially took the door panel apart (i popped off the top of the elbowrest and partially exposed the lock), and everything seems to be connected, but it's like the lock seems to get caught on something inside the door. can you tell me what's wrong, and what to do to fix it. also, i'm kind of stumped on how to fully take off the rear door panel.
I have a 2005 Xterra and the same thing started happening to me on an intermitent basis. The dealership eventually replaced the guts of the door release equipment under warrenty but that was after 3 trips to the dealership.
Now my rear hatch won't open. My theory is that after an total repaint (hail) in the summer of 2006 the body shop made something out of wack with these door mechanisms.
