Pull the transmission, and change the seal. Either that or you can change the PCV valve, and stop the crankcase from building up the pressure that is pushing the oil out of the rear seal.
Chnging the seal is a $1200 job, and changing the PCV costs about $15.. Take your pick. If you opt for the rear seal, and don't do the PCV.. Don't come crying to me when it is still leaking.

Ive got the whole motor torn apart, im doing the oil pump right now so i was wondering if i could do the rear main while im at it with the oil pan off or if i had to pull the tranny. Im just new to these LS motors. Im guessing its a one piece seal. When you say change the pvc valve do you mean plug it?

No, if it (PCV) was plugged, then the rear main seal would leak. They are not designed to hold pressure, they are more of just a 'splash shield' .

If the seal is not leaking, then don't touch it.

several things, the rear main seal is accessable by removing the transmission. if this vehicle is standard transmission, then would recomend new clutch at this time given the amount of labor involved. if automatic, remove drive shafts, transfer case, transmission, and flexplate ....replace rear main. approx 5 hrs.

Rear main seal replacment

If you have a shop you need to pull the engine to replace the rear main seal. There is a possibility of a two part seal. If you have a two part seal drop the oil pan and pull the rear main engine cap off and then replace the seal. You may need specialized tools.

Rear main seal leaks..does this affect transmission??

A leaking rear main seal will not cause your transmission to leak.

The transmission has its own seal and should not leak because of the engine rear main seal.

Due to the labor involved in replacing the rear main seal on the engine, it is best if you replace the front transmission seal at the same time if possible.

Installation varies on different vehicles but the principles are the same.

Main seal

First is it a front seal ,or rear main seal,(front seal, being were you see the pulleys and fan belts,,you have to look at the bottom pulley, follow the shaft to the motor, where the shaft goes into the motor is the front seal, the pulley and everthing behind it has to come out then you pull out the seal, auto zone actually has free tool rental that you can pull the seal, and a tool to put it back in,if a rear main seal its where the shaft from the transmission meets the back of the motor, youll have to pull the trannsmission back, check where you see the oil leek from, the front seal you can do if mechanically inclined, but if its the rear you should take to a mechanic,if this helps please give me a fix ya vote
