My 97 Pontiac grand prix has a humming/vibrating noise starting at 35mph and is loud enough to drowned out the radio? It sounds like its coming from the front center of the car? The driving and performance is not effected at all and does not get better or worse and always starts at 35+ mph

Unfortunately, there isn't much information to go on here. I would think wheel hub from what is given.

It is probably the wheel bearings they have been known for that.

It really sounds like a wheel bearing to me, If you drive down a straight smooth road and gently rock the steering wheel back and forth, you can sometimes tell which side it is by the way the car loads the front wheels. I believe this bearing can be purchased as hub and bearing assembly so it is fairly easy to replace but the part is pricey. Remove the wheel, brake caliper and rotor, look through the hub flange access holes and undo the mounting bolts and pull the bearing assembly out of the knuckle.

SOURCE: Loud annoying sound when driving over 35 mph

Check the fluid level and make sure. If the fluid level is not the problem, I would have someone do a complete check on the front end.

SOURCE: ford explorer making loud roaring noise at 35 to 45 mph

what year is your explorer, if it is a newer one say within the last 10 years it could be from either the rear end or it could be from a hub bearing in the front end. these have problems with hub bearings going out.

Weird noise in front of car

How would changing the rear pads fix a noise in the front? Take the front wheels off and look for excess rust on the discs or grit in or on the pads. It sounds like you might be competent enough to take the calipers off (it's not very hard). If the noise gets louder with speed, it could very well be the bearings. This is much harder to do yourself (yay FWD), and you might want to get it towed so you don't damage the hubs, etc. Just shaking the wheel probably isn't enough to diagnose bad bearings.
