That is a tough repair. The best way to approach this repair is to remove the engine, then remove the timing belt covers and then remove the cylinder heads to repair the valves. This is a difficult repair, and is beyond the scope of what the average DIY auto repair project would be. If your engine is super high mileage, a rebuilt engine or possibly a less costly option a used engine may be a good choice. Good luck with this difficult repair.
1987 ?' is it worth repairing
SOURCE: My timing belt broke on
mine broke on my 2000 and i lucked out, the top end was unharmed. the cheapest route is to have someone change the timing belt, fire it up and see if it runs. it will spit and sputter at first while adjusting the timing, but after a few minutes it will clear up. if it runs like ****, your valves are shot. the 2.4 is a non interference motor, so it's the luck of the irish on your side.

just go to any junk yard and find a used deawoo lanos and pull the head if timing belt was not broke, if it looks good, its a exact fit 100%, no special tools needed, just normal wrench set and torqe wrench. after head is installed, get a gates timing belt only.

i would go with the mechanics advice and allow them to fix it. 1200 to 1500 beats spending 4000 on another motor if that one can be saved

That many miles a replacement new/used engine would be a better route in my opinion.
