Question about Hyundai Santa Fe
The dome lamp has a switch that can be put into several positions. "Door" "Off" and "On" If you want the light to come on when you open the door then you must have the switch in the "Door" position.
The "Off" position will only let the dome lamp work when you override it with the dash control and the "On" position will leave the light on at all times - door open or not.

I had the same problem on my 2010 Santa Fe. When front door is opened, the rear dome light comes on OK but the front light does not work. Based on comments I saw on the internet, I assumed that the diode in my overhead light asm had blown. So I did the following: 1) Removed the overhead light asm by removing 2 Phillips screws, then pulled asm down from ceiling & unplugged cable. 2) Removed electrical board from overhead light asm by removing 4 Phillips screws and unsnapping 2 black plastic tabs. 3) Soldered another diode right next to the existing one (I did not bother removing the old one). I made sure that diode orientation is the same (i.e.- silver bar is on the same side of both old & new diode) 4) Reattached electrical board to overhead light asm. 5) Plugged cable back in, and replaced the overhead light asm. This fix worked like a champ! Total repair time = 30 minutes. Total cost = $2.02. I bought 10 relatively beefy diodes from Amazon.com, and now I have 9 spares. For the exact diode that I used, go to Amazon.com and search for B009IN1KB8.

Next to the round exterior light switch is a switch that controls the brightness of the interior dome lights. You can push (detent) that button in and it will pop out to make it easier to brighten/dim those lights. The tricky part is that the switch for making the dome lights illuminate when you enter/exit the vehicle is actually the top half of the backplate of the dome brightness switch. It says "dome off" on the upper portion of the backplate. That one inch area - that barely depresses - is actually the switch to make the dome lights work with the door operation. Try pressing it and then opening your door. It should work. Good Luck!

door pin switches frozen by ice or rust. Remove and replace. Also check there is not a 3 way switch at the dome light that keeps the light off when doors open.

I had a friend that had the same issue. I had the same issue with my 99 Bonneville the outside door handle and the door latch itself where sticking because of dirt or some other substance. I kept my car very clean and I also cleaned the door jambs after every wash, but still there was a sticking in the latch and handle.
I could be driving down the road and the lights would be on. and I would open the window (with the doors locked and flick the outside handle and the interior lights would turn off. then I knew it was the outside handle that had a censor that was sticking. Why does the out side handle even have a censor? Good question. It seems the more sophisticated our cars become the more probability of issues from the littlest things.

The problem is the diode needs to be replaced. The dome light works in the "on" position, but does not work when any of the doors are opened. The diode itself is about half the size of a dime which you can buy from a kia dealer for less then $20. You don't have to disconnect the battery to do this.
1. Remove the kick panel which is right next to the foot rest on the drivers side and where the fuse box is located. You will have to pry open the door foot guard to get to the other screw for the kick panel.
2. right next to the fuses box there is a wiring harness wraped in black cloth like material or some type of harness cover, just peel it back or remove. You can feel the diode through the wrap.
3. the diode is in a sleeve like incasement or cover carefully pry open and slide the diode out.
4. replace diode with new one and your done.

make sure the dome override switch is depressed. The switch is located just above the rotating knob which dims the interior ligthts. The dome overide switch is located just to left of the steering column.
