I have a 1994 Ford Escort Wagon, and it won't shift out of park. Just had new brakes installed less than a month ago, the car runs fine, and no tail lights are out.

Check to see if your brake lights are working. if the brake light switch fails, you can't take it out of park.

1995 Ford Escort Wagon Automatic, Won't shift

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

My girlfriend's 1994 Ford Escort LX is stuck in park and won't shift.

Do you mean you can not move the shift lever? If so when you push down the brake pedal do you hear the shfit lock out solenoid move (click)? If not then check power to the shift lock out solenoid (fuse). Hope this is helpful.

1994 Ford Escort dies at stops

I had the same problem a year ago. I problem was that the intake manifold gasket had a small hole and it was causing the computer to constantly change the air to fuel ratio. The constant changing cause the engine to die at stops.
