Sounds more like the Crankshaft Positon Sensor gone bad.
Try changing fuel filter first...if filter is not clogged then it possibly can be the pressure regulator that is located on the throttle body...it looks like a vacuum component with a vacuum line attached to it...I had a 98 dodge dakota that would not have any power but would idle and the regulator turned out to be bad...this regulator in kind of expensive( I paid $110.00)

Answer
could be for a variety of reasons. no compression i.e. cracked block,
automatic shutdown relay faulty, slipping torque converter, poor fuel in
tank, check fluid levels and examine condition, check plugs, wires,
perform vacuum test or leak down test to check for worn piston rings,
valves check for stored obd I codes in your ecu by turning ign (without
starting) on, off, on, off then on again. if a stored trouble code is
present, your \"maint req'd\" light in the dash will flash a number of
times identifying the fault code.
Change the fuel filter and if that doesn't do it have the cat convertor checked out.
make sure timeing belt didnt break
