SOURCE: tail gate will not open
Remove all the screws you can see from plastic cover.Remove two bolts holding inside grab handle. Pop loose the plastic paneling (held in place by plastic tabs) just enough to put arm through below glass at center. Pull up on metal rod ( make sure it is not locked). Once you've got the door open then you can finish taking off entire plastic paneling to get to nut holding handle assembly in place. Lubricate actual latch and make sure nothing is stuck or not working properly. You can buy a whole new latch assembly at jeeppartsstore.com for like 38.00 bucks. Just replaced ours this morning too.

You may have to pull the latch, the latches inside the tailgate got loose or the tailgate is bent inward take a sluge hammer and hit it on the oppisite side to make flush!
SOURCE: Can't get the tailgate open on my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I had the same problem. I was able to get the back window open.
I took the the 4 screws off that are on top of the inside of the door (where the tailgate window latch is).
Got a metal coat hanger. straightened it and made a hook at one end.
carefully pushed the plastic part of the tailgate towards the inside
slid the coat hanger straight down (to the level of the tailgate key/handle) to catch the door latch from the inside and pulled up.
that will get the tailgate open.
then you need to take the rest of the screws out of the lower part of
the tailgate to get at the latch assembly. Carefully take the plastic off.
(you will need to take the
nice black insulation stuff off the metal part of the door carefully so you can replace it and
tape it up if necessary after fixing the latch.)
peel the insulation off the metal part of the door, you will see the
assembly rod has come off the latch and will need putting back in place and a
little sqweeze to stay on.
really bad design I guess, but since I fixed it at
140000, I haven't had any trouble with it at 166000.
SOURCE: 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited Glass Latch will not move on own.
Hello and welcome the problem is very simple to resolve first make sure you have battery power turn off vehicle open rear gate unlock doors go to rear gate and look at lock unlock again and push the Grey plastic lock trigger mechanism forward towards front glass close gate unlock again make sure lock is still in the position you just set it to and close glass it will the lock. Normally what happens in this situation was power was removed from your jeep and the rear gate was opened with no power running to electric lock so it stays in a set position you cannot lock the glass because there was no power in the electric lock I will lock once you reset it Hope this help. SOURCE: broken tailgate latch
Remove the paneling from inside. Than you can use a flathead screwdriver to pry the latch rod and latch enough to pop open the door.
