My 2005 Cobalt started running at 230 degrees and when I checked the coolant level there was none in the resevoir? Should I be worried about the engine being damage? I drove it for about 10 minutes without it steaming, etc..

Your coolant has either gone to the outside of the engine via broken hose, radiator leak, heater core leak, or head gaskt to outside. OR it leaked into your engine via head gasket leak to one or more of your cylinders. If this is the case, then you might notice water issuing from your tail pie (after you put water back in it of course)

You probably didn't sustain any major damage. You should be concerned about the loss of coolant. If there is no evidence of a leak where you park then it;s possible you could have a leak that only happens with the engine running. Being a late model GM car, it uses a coolant called DexCool. It is pink in color and is known to cause deterioration of certain gasket materials. In particular, the upper intake plenum gasket. These leaks are difficult to find. With the engine running, use a bright flashlight and look for coolant puddling around the edges of the intake plenum. Also check your radiator and heater hoses for pinhole leaks that could open up when the coolant gets hot. Be sure and keep a close eye on your coolant level until you find out if you have a leak.

THE ENTIRE TOP OF THE WATER COOLER IS VERY HOT AND THE BOTTLE FEELS WARM

If the temp gauge reads in the middle, nothing to worry about. Engine coolant normally runs up to 220 even 230
degrees f.

Normal running temperature

I would look else where for the problem unless the thermostat is stuck open. Thermostats work by blocking the water to the radiator until the coolant in the block has reached operating temperature and then they start to open. As soon as they read a cooler water temperature they will start to close and restrict the flow until the operating temperature is maintained . IT would make no difference which thermostat you fitted as the number indicates when it starts to open. I would be checking the temperature sender unit and the gauge and I would be checking the coolant level in the radiator at the cap not the resevoir

I just need the steps in putting new coolant in a 2006 chevy cobalt LT do i need to purge any thing or what?

Your owners manual should have step-by-step instructions. If that is not available this is what I would do: With the engine "overnight cold", that is to say after sitting all night, locate the coolant resevoir (forgive my speeling please), you will notice on the side of the resevoir notches telling you where the level should be when, cold fill the resevior to this level, if you over fill it don't worry. Never put coolant in a radiator with a hot engine you can crack the engine block, and/or burn yourself badly, also make sure you use not only the proper coolant but a good quality one as well.
I hope this has helped you. :-)

Vw jetta iv, temperature alarm sounds and flash with no aparent reason. temperature dial indiator is ok.

I WOULD CHECK BOTH RADIATOR HOSES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE HOT. THERMOSTAT COULD BE STICKING SLIGHTLY CLOSED.CHECK COOLANT LEVEL MAKE SURE COOLANT NOT LOW.IF COOLING NOT BOILING OUT OF THE EXPANSION TANK. I WOULD HAVE CAR HOOKED UP TO A DIAGNOTIC SCANNER AND CHECK COOLANT TEMPERATURE SEE IF TEMP. OVER 230 DEGREES IF SO RADIATOR COOLING FANS NOT WORKING.COOLANT THERMO SWITCH BAD BOTH FANS SHOULD BE RUNNING AT LOW SPEED.IF ALL LOOKS GOOD YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY LOW COOLANT SENSOR IN EXPANSION TANK.MAKE SURE COOLANT IS IN THE EXPANSION TANK BECAUSE COOLANT LEVEL COULD BE LOW.ADD COOLANT IN THE EXPANSION TANK UNTIL YOU AT MAX LEVEL LINE ON THE EXPANSION TANK.DONT OVER FILL THE EXPANSION KEEP ADDING COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STAYS AT THE MAX LEVEL LINE ON THE EXPANSION TANK.

The coolant light is on and it seems to be blowing cold air

The coolant light being "on" indicates that either your car has not warmed up or you're actually low on coolant.
Check your coolant level by way of the coolant container in the engine compartment. If it is low (check marks on the container and fill to level as necessary.

Just changed out the waterpump. fluid in resevoir full, maybe to full, is this a problem. No heat coming out of dash?

NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR COOLANT MIXTURE IS CORRECT AND BE SURE TO
CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT BECAUSE AFTER A MOTOR OVERHEATS THE WAX
DIAPHRAGM IN THE THERMOSTAT BECOMES DISTORTED

What is hte proper temp on a 2008 cobalt?

Ususally the thermostat opens at 195 to 200 degrees. Coolant and pressure allow normal temps to go to 230 to 240, and much higher under heat soak condition (unit turned off). Fans kick in near that temp. So, the engine needs to be that hot to be efficient and to have emission controls shift to normal... Also the high temprature prolongs engine life by forcing moisture from the oil.

Radiator fans don't keeping running to keep the temp constant of the coolant

the fan only runs when the coolant temp reaches 225-230 degrees F, the temp will not remain constant, it will climb towards hot and then the fan will engage and bring it down, this is normal operation

97 deville overheating after having to replace coolant resevoir.Once you let it cool and cycle fluid w/cap off resevoir,it will start forcefully bubbling out and temp.info center reading starts climing...

Gas bubbles in the coolant resevoir while the motor is running indicates a blown head gasket.
If in doubt, take it to a radiator shop and ask for a combustion gas check on your radiator.

I think you need the head gasket replaced.
