The car will stop and die while driving. While driving it will not allow you to accelerate and will eventually die. It will restart after allowing the car to sit after an hour or so. It has not had the spark plugs or wires changed in a while and I was told that may be the problem. We have recently changed the fuel filter as we were told that may be the issue. Please what xould the issue be?

It seems like you are on the right track. It is either electronic or fuel issue. Did you every put some alcohol inside your gas tank to take any water out with the gas?
Eventually water condense inside the gas tank over time and you may have a puddle of water in your gas tank. Thus is it always to keep you gas tank full all the time to avoid having empty space to allow for condensation.
Gas companies put alcohol during winter months to allow the alcohol to bond water and gas together and let it get out of the tank with the gas.
Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop that has diagnostic testing tools an knowledge to find the problem . Other wise all you will do is replace parts that don't need to be replaced . Hooking up a professional scanner an checking data from engine sensors to the computer , O2 sensors , mass air flow sensor , fuel trims - short term an long term . Guessing as to what the problem is , never works . Testing - not guessing . 064 Emission Tests Scan Data Pre Check 004 Signal Values and Scan Data 002 Fuel System Tests Start Here
If you don't know what any of this is , you have no business trying to fix it .
Have the 'Throttle' or 'Accelerator' re learn performed. Some will re learn as follows : Turn ignition to RUN with engine OFF. Push throttle pedal to the floor and hold it there for 30 seconds.
Turn ignition off and then release throttle. Start engine and allow it to idle until warm ( 80C.) Do not rev the engine or put it in gear dueing warm up. It must be allowed to warm up at idle only. When you hear the radiator fan come on, turn engine off. Wait 10 seconds and restart engine. Test drive.
This procedure MAY have caused the throttle to relearn. If the same problem is present, go to dealer or VW shop and have them 'relearn' the throttle with a scanner.
Generic OBD II "Drive Cycle"
Most OBD II ("On-Board Diagnostics II") diagnostic monitors will run at some time during normal operation of the vehicle. However, to satisy all of the different Trip enable criteria and run all of the OBD II diagnostic monitors, the vehicle must be driven under a variety of conditions. The following drive cycle will (theoretically) allow all monitors to run on (??) vehicle. (Note: Drive cycle specifics vary by vehicle!)
Ensure that the fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full.
Start cold (below 86°F /30°C) and warm up until engine coolant temperature is at least 160° F (typically requires at least one minute; up to 3 minutes).
Accelerate to 40-55 MPH at 25% throttle and maintain speed for five minutes.
Decelerate without using the brake (coast down) to 20 MPH or less, then stop the vehicle. Allow the engine to idle for 10 seconds, turn the key off, and wait one minute.
Restart and accelerate to 40-55 MPH at 25% throttle and maintain speed for two minutes.
Decelerate with using the brake [or the clutch!] by coasting down to 20 MPH or less, then stop the vehicle. Allow the engine to idle for 10 seconds, turn the key off, and wait one minute.
Check your fuel filter. If it hasn't been changed in a long time, it is very likely that it is full, thus allowing less gas to pass through and, eventually, making your car stop when not accelerating.
Car dies when coming off acceleration or at idle in traffic or at a stop. I can watch the Tach go to 0 RPM, some times it will restart immediately other times it is hard to start, so far I have always been able to re-start it and Drive on. Does anybody have verified fix for this issue, I have seen posts saying can and crank sensor, throttle body, EGR, and many more ideas... Do not really want to just start replacing parts with the hope that I eventually get a fix. Help...
