Question about Toyota Tercel

2 Answers

My 1993 Toyota Tercel does not start when key is turned. New battery, all fuses checked and fine. When the doors get opened, hazard lights start blinking for 15 blinks, then pause, then 15 blinks. This continues until doors are closed. A friend discovered a green Toyota starter relay under the dash directly underneath the glove compartment that you can feel clicking when you touch it when the 15 beats of hazard lights goes on. Any ideas if this may be my problem? Maybe just replacing the starter relay? What does the doors being opened have to do with initiating this blinking?

Hello! I believe your Tercel Is equipped with Theft Deterrent which is faulty..The starter relay is being pulsed by the Slave Relay (SLRY) or alarm relay...Check the connector on the rear of the green starter relay...
It has four pins...Wire colors are ...Pin#1=Black/Red...Pin#2=White/Green...Pin#3=White/Black OR Black/White...If the vehicle has Theft Deterrent with Door Lock The wire color of pin#3 will be Black/White...

When the doors are opened and the theft deterrent is set the vehicle will not start and the hazard lights will flash...Question is, has the alarm system worked in the past? If pin#3 on the starter relay is a Black/White wire, disconnect that wire and tape it off...then tie pin#3 to chassis ground...Test to see if the engine will start...Send a comment...Guru...saailer

Thank you for the response. I'll send it on to my car guy but won't know if this is it until he gets back over here....hopefully tomorrow.

So, my car had been starting without anyone doing anything, so I let it go over the holidays. Went out today and it wouldn't start today just like before. A friend rescued me and found a Mirage Model M after market alarm under the dash on the driver's side. When he undid a plug-in on the back, the alarm stopped. When he plugged it back it, the car started. But, who knows if it'll start when I leave for work tomorrow. He thinks it's a loose wire between the alarm and the door. Tomorrow after work, he plans to disconnect the alarm and see if that solves the problem. How's that sound to you?
I'm including a weblink of a picture of the alarm.

Hello! That sounds like a very good idea...When it is removed, connections into the ignition that were cut (to insert an alarm lead in series) need to be reconnected...Keep me posted...Saailer

And where do they get connected to?

Are you referring to a Mirage Model M after market alarm system or the factory alarm? If it is the factory alarm cut pin #3 of the starter relay (Black/White) tape off the wire heading away from the pin ...Then connect the Black/White coming from the relay to chassis ground...If it is a Mirage the Black/White wire coming from the ignittion switch has been cut and the alarm lead inserted in series...Remove the alarm and reconnect the two Black/White factory wires TO EACH OTHER...Saailer

This sounds like a starter disable feature of a car alarm. Somewhere under the dash you are going to find a box with the start wires running to it. The start wire is black with a white stripe and is thick, about a 12 gauge wire. It will come from the ignition switch and run into a relay or box. It could be installed anywhere as it is aftermarket. Once you find it, you can reconnect both ends of the starter wire and you can start it with the key. I would disconnect the power to the alarm or your lights are going to flash at random. The factory alarm (just in case it is the issue, but that isn't likely) is located behind the radio and ashtray.

I recently replaced the timing belt on my 92 tercel. everything is running fine however my hazard lights blink when ever the key is in the ignition they will blink for awhile stop then continue

Are you saying that the key just has to be in the ignition? Or you need to turn the key before it
happens?

Most likely, there is a problem with the switch that you push to turn on the hazard lights.
Either the switch itself is damaged and somethings loose inside it which is making the
hazard lights come on and off randomly, or the wires going to the switch are making contact
with each other.

Remove the switch and see if the button feels loose, and check the wires going to the switch.
To remove it you need to detach the plastic piece that covers above an below the gauges that the switch is housed inside. There are 2 phillips screws that hold it on on top. And pull off the knob
that you use to to dim and brighten the lights on the gauge cluster. Remove the nut under that knob. Then you can pull the plastic cover away and detach the switch. Then check the wires and switch.

If you needed to get another switch you would probably need to get it from a Toyota dealer or
from a wrecking yard. i would get it from the wrecking yard if there are any in you area.

Or the turn signal/hazard flasher may be malfunctioning. The same flasher is used by the turn
signal and hazard lights. Maybe the components in the flasher that control the hazard lights are
not working right. So you could try changing that if you wanted to. Its located somewhere in
the relay center under the hood or near one of the fuse panels.

Are the turn signals working correctly?

And its just coincidence, chaging the timing belt has nothing to do with it.
I drive a 92 Tercel too. But ive never had a problem like this.
