Try to get access to behind the bulb lens where the wires lead to the socket for the bulb. May have to squeeze the socket and turn a little to release it.

License plate lights arent working

You didn't forget to pull the headlight switch to check them? That's odd, usually license plate lights are spliced in from the tail light circuit.
There may be a separate ground for the license lights-if so, should be right nearby the bulbs. Use a test light or voltmeter and make sure fuse 22 has power. You could also check the sockets for power. If you have power to the socket and new bulbs don't work, it would be a grounding problem.

How do you change a license plate light on a 2005 Ford Escape?

I just replaced one of the license plate lights on my '05. Gently push the housing toward the center of the car as you pry under the outside edge, and it will pop out. Remove the socket from the housing by twisting it 1/4 turn. The bulb is the push-in type commonly used for marker and dash lights. I always spray some Radio Shack electrical contact cleaner into the socket before inserting a new bulb - helps make a good contact and prevents corrosion. Hope this helps!

in my book it said that it is a (194 trade number), I woulds change out bulbs and then fuse.
