My check engine light came on. I tightened up the gas cap, drove it for a couple of days and it cleared up. I too it in to Sears because the maintenance check was due, and had an oil change done and an air filter replaced. I described the initial problem to and was told by the Sears service Mngr that I had PO EVAP emissions control system leak (Large), which they could not fix. However, since readjusting the gas cap, and having the maintenance check done the problem seems to have temporarily cleared up. My research has led me to the conclusion that my VENT SOLENOID AND CANISTER may need to be replaced. What are my options?

Your car has a sophisticated pressure test for the evap system. If the engine light is not on, the system is working. A loose gas cap is a typical reason for the light to come on. Once corrected, the system needs time on the road to retest and clear the code. Why do you believe you still have a problem?

Driving home last night... gas cap light comes on. I tightened gas cap, restarted car and light goes off...started car this morning and now check engine light on

The "gas cap light" actually does not mean the gas cap is loose or defective. It is telling you there is a leak in the fuel system somewhere, usually a vapor line or stuck or defective valve. Not very often is it the gas cap that causes the light to come on.Time for a scan and a smoke test to fine the leak.

2002 Montero Sport LS 3.0 engine

Go to an auto parts store and have them read the code(s) to tell you what the problem is. If there are no other problems, it is safe to drive there.

Likely a problem related to the pollution control equipment - catalytic converter, PCV valve, etc. Hard to tell without the codes.

Is your gas cap on tight? Often that is the problem. It may take a couple of drives and/or days to clear the Check Engine light after you have tightened the gas cap.

Good luck !!

Engine light,

99% of the time, the gas cap wasn't tightened properly, or is leaking. Make sure you twist it tight and it clicks a few times. If the "Check Engine" light stays on after a few days, buy a new gas cap. Again it may take a few days to clear.

Check engine light has come on twice just after getting gas..coincidence? my friend cleared the memory first time. I drove all day and night nothing changed until 1 minute after leaving gas station,...

Your gas cap could be bad. They are designed to hold a vaccum, if there is no vaccum it will trigger your check engine light with a EVAP system problem. It could also be from not tightenig the cap down properly(don't worry, it happens more than the world will ever know). Always make sure to tighten the cap until it clicks three to five times. And you should be able to get your gas cap tested for free at your local state vehicle safty inspection location. Gas cap testing is a part of most states vehicle inspection process. Good Luck and I hope this helps in some way

I have a 2002 grand vitara suzuki the light of check engine soon is comming on I know the code is p.o. 442 . should I bring to the mechanic again? Thank you

First make sure your gas cap it tight. 3 clicks. On a 9 year old car I would replace the gas cap if the light does not go out after your tighten the cap, clear the codes, and drive it for a couple of days. It can also be a leak at one of the fuel vapor hoses or a leak in the EVAP system.

Service engine soon light comes on

Have you checked the gas cap to see if it is on tight? If you purchased gas in the last couple days it might be the solution. Tighten the cap and drive a couple days to see if the light goes off. If the cap is loose, you might need a new cap.
