My fuel guage dont work is it the sender unit or the guage on the clocks thank you

  • lgermanakos Jul 14, 2008

my gas gauge doesn't work on my 91 940 gle, it has a recently installed sending unit (used) and supposedly it was installed by a experienced volvo mechanic who l assumed lined it up properly, my understanding is if the sending unit is not mounted at 12 o'clock, the float may not operate properly and give false readings on the cluster gauge, any information on what to look for would be greatly appreciated

Your problem is fuel gauge is hanging up on the fuel pump. The slide bar/fuel sender is located inside the fuel tank alongside the fuel pump. Today I removed my fuel tank and replaced the pick up strainer on my fuel pump and previously my fuel gauge didn't work, but all I needed to do was slightly bend the slide mechanism and my fuel reading read correctly on my gauge. Previous to that I showed no reading on the dash meter.

No the fuel gauge is mechanical, it could be an issue with the sender unit or the wiring between the sender unit and the gauge

The gas tank fuel guage sender of my 1995 Volvo 960 has stopped working. I have replaced this twice before with new units. What can I do to repair the old unit?

Youmight have to check if your fuel tank contains water or moisture and results in the deterioration of the unit. There is not much that can be done but to patch up the potentiometer and the readinds may be wrong.
So this time clean out your tank, check for rust wash out and replace. Fill from reputed pumps only

Just got 440cd,What does ''SRS'' light mean. Also fuel guage not working. Any ideas on problem.

Suplemental Restraint System is the air bag system, When the light comes on there is a problem with the system. The guage could be the tank sender, the guage in the dash, the instrument circuit board or the wiring.

My gas gauge is always reading full why 1999 cavalier

Hi

The most likely cause is that the fuel sender in the tank is faulty or that the wiring to the sender is bad.

Less common causes are a faulty fuel guage or circuit in the instrument panel.

Test the sender as it is the most likely cause and easiest to eliminate.

First inspect all connections that are readily visible to insure that they are secure & free from dirt or corrosion.

Disconnect the fuel tank sender wire at the tank. The guage should continue to show full (ignition on). Ground the wire from the sending unit at the fuel tank to any good grounding point on the car. The gauge should go to "Empty". If it does this is a strong indicator that the sending unit is at fault.

Hope this helps. Please do rate my answer. Thanks

I need to replace the fuel pump in my 940 Volvo.

Disconnect battery ground strap before beginning to work on the fuel/electrical system. Do not smoke or have anything in the area which can ignite or cause sparks

  1. Drain enough fuel from tank to prevent spilling, no more than 4 gallons (16 liters) of fuel should remain. Use suitable pumping equipment.
  2. Remove floor mat and panel from trunk.
  1. Disconnect wiring harness connector to sending unit. Remove wires from connector.
  2. Disconnect ground wire to sender. Push wires through grommet.
  3. Remove cover for access to tank sending unit.
  1. All models: Disconnect from the fuel tank sending unit:
    1. Breather hose C
    2. Return hose A
    3. Supply hose B
    4. Filler hose D
    5. Wiring harness from clip E
  1. Clean area and unscrew fuel tank sender/pump cap or equivalent. Remove tank sender/pump and seal.
  2. Remove pump from sender/pump assembly.
INSTALLATION
  1. Inspect the pump for damage, feed pump hose and wiring for wear. Replace as needed.
  2. Install new pump to sender/pump assembly.
  3. Install rubber seal in neck of tank. Lubricate inside of seal.
  1. Install fuel tank sender/pump unit. Align it with the moulded joint (arrows) on tank.
  2. Apply rustproofing compound to exposed metal portions of tank sender.
CAUTION : With tape or rubber caps, protect fuel sender openings from overspray.
  1. Torque fuel tank sender/pump lock ring to: 22 ft-lb (30 Nm)
  2. Reassemble components in reverse order. Use tie straps to secure all hoses and wiring.

Temperature Guage, '89 Camry

the cable going from the gauge to the sender unit is an earth return. if you take it off the sender unit wire if the gauge does read hot the sender and earth it out the gauge should go to the hot segment.dont leave this cable to earth very long do it quickly. if the gauge does read it is ok, there is no earth to the petrol tank. if it does not read it will be faulty. hope this helps.

Sub Fuel Tank

Very Hard!!!! There are no specs on this, the only way out is to go to your nearest dealer and look at a sender unit and measure its resistance and compare the 2 sender units resistance. It should be measured in Kilo holms, the way to measure it is read the resistance when the floats at its 'lowest' point, and the resistance sould either increase or decrease when you move the float 'up', this depends on what resistance the fuelguage requires, to test if the fuel guage works,'take the positive cable that plugs into the sender unit, fuse it with a low ampeage fuse and connect it to body/chassis while key 'on' and check fuel guage, it must go to full position, there could be another problem, check cables for opencircuits, and check earth(-)connection to the sender unit, plse post to me for further assistance Mishdaman.....
