If the cigarette lighter is the ONLY thing that is not working. Either the wires have been disconnected or the coil is broken. Test the socket with a multimeter. If you have voltage and this checks out, Chances are the lighter itself (the coil) is damaged and should be replaced. If you have no voltage at the socket, the wires are likely corroded or broken somewhere and should be fixed/cleaned/soldered.
You might have a blown fuse, check the fuses. if the lighter does'nt heat up the lighter itself could be bad and need to be replaced, or the outer shell that holds the lighter might need to be replaced.
They probably share the same fuse. Sounds like cig lighter coil is shorted and "fiddling around" blew the fuse. Replace the fuse and try a different lighter coil.
