Sounds like you have a bad oil pressure sending unit, the oil pressure sending unit controls your oil pressure gauge, what I would do is remove the oil pressure sender and hook a manual oil pressure gauge up to your engine and verify you have sufficient oil pressure, if you have good oil pressure on your gauge then replace the sending unit, if you have a low reading on the gauge stop your engine immediatly and start looking at a potenial problem with your oil pump or lubricating system within the engine....
If the engine is not making any clattering noise due to no oil pressure to the lifters, the problem may be the oil pressure sending unit or a connection to or at the sender. On the 4.0 engine the
sending unit is on the right side of the engine near the transmission. On the 4.7 it's located on
the lower left front of the engine above the oil filter. Just to be on the safe side, I would screw a
mechanical oil pressure gauge into the sending unit hole to be sure the pressure is good. You
may be able to rent a gauge at a parts store. Or you can have your mechanic do this for you
it's not that big a job. BUT if the engine is clattering have it towed to the shop, you may have
oil pump problems. Hope this helps.
If your engine oil is full its more than likely the oil pressure sending unit good luck
Ran into this problem on my 94 model. changed all three oil sensors before it fixed the problem. check the wire harness for cracks in the connector and the wires.

If there are no tapping or knocking noises when the engine is running, chances are that either the wire on the pressure sending unit has fallen off or the sender itself has gone bad. If you are unsure about if you have pressure or not, you can attach an external test gauge to the engine right where the sender goes. If unsure, best not to run the engine or you can seriously damage it.
