Siezed pumps are a nightmare.

Spray with penetrating fluid, let that soak for 5 minutes then use a length of 3x3 wooden post and hit hard with a lump hammer. It will eventually break out.

The pump is alloy the block is cast so you'll be fine.

Where is the thermostat and water pump on a 1998 bmw 316i

  • They are both on the same side as the belt. You have to remove the fan and belts and the coolant as well. As you will see in the photo I have uploaded the thermostat housing. You remover the hose from the top of the radiator and the plastic housing that the hose is attached too is the thermostat housing. The water pump is right below (also indicated in the photo)

To get the viscous clutch of the water pump you first need to remove the belt pulley and remove the water pump. Then put the impeller of the water pump in a vice and using a 32 spanner screw the viscous clutch off. Note that the bolt on the viscous clutch is of left hand thread so you have to unscrew the opposite way to a normal bolt.

Bmw 316i overheating

check if the water is circulating as you might have a blockage in the header tank. this can be checked by opening the radiator cap and check if the water is circulating on top.

Take off water pump

Dis-connect battery, drain coolant, remove fan & radiator cowling ( fan coupling has a left hand thread ) undo 4 x retaining bolts in water pump housing. To get the pump out, you may have to tap it slightly & lever it about as the body fits inside an alloy casting. Before you refit, make sure the housing the pump fit into it clean & free from corrosion or pitting by cleaning with some medium to fine abrasive paper. Put some grease ( not sealer ) around the new pump seal & refit everything else. Remember to bleed the air out of the cooling system before driving. Hope this helps & good luck !
