Hi - My 03 Ion wipers have just started to cause me problems. Went through an automatic car wash a few weeks ago and the driver's side wiper arm flipped up and i think got bent/broke somewhere inside during the car wash. The arm now is very loose and 'wobbly' compared to the passenger side one - I hope it just needs tightening and not an entire wiper transmission replacement. I don't want to get hosed at the repair shop so am putting it off until I get some advice. Both wipers still work, but the driver's side is half a second slower wiping up, and half a second slower wiping down than the passenger wiper.

I would call around to local junkyards and see if any have an 03 Ion. If so go buy the drivers wiper arm from them. At the base of the arm is a socket with serrations or splines in it. If these are rounded off, do not buy the arm, just keep looking. Once you have a good one, make sure your wiper switch is in OFF position. Have someone with some basic tools pull off the plastic cap over the base of your wiper arm if it is still there. Generally these caps are gone after about 2 years. Then remove the nut which holds the arm onto the little stub. Pull the wiper arm off, may take a little gentle rocking but do not pry against glass. When it is off, put your replacement arm on so that it sits in the right rest position, snug the nut down, and put the cap back on. If you know what loctite is that nut would be a good place for it, but not necessary. Might be a good time to replace both wiper blades. Alternatively you can pull off the cap and snug the nut down, but if the serrations are smoothed over this will be useless.

Either the wiper arms are loose or stripped on the pivots or the wiper linkage is broken. Try tightening the arm to pivot bolt. If that doesn't work, remove the plastic cowling and examine the linkage. You can buy new linkage for it.

Front drivers wiper not working

I have the same problem. When I removed the drivers side wiper arm, I found that the nut that held the arm in place was only finger tight, which allowed the arm to raise slightly off the splined shaft. This caused the shaft to strip the splines out of the wiper arm.. after inspecting and cleaning the shaft, it appears that the splines on the shaft are still in decent shape. You may need to only replace the wiper arm. About $50 at a few online toyota parts sellers. replacing it is simple and requires only a flat blade screwdriver to remove the black cap off the nut, and a wrench to remove and replace the nut. simply remove the nut, and pop off the wiper arm. push the new arm onto the splined shaft pointing the same place as the passenger side wiper, then tighten the nut down. I would also suggest wiping the metal shavings off the splined shaft with some sort of abrasive pad, like scotchbrite, before putting the new wiper arm back on. I hope this helps.

Hi. Please check at the base of the wiper arm and remove the black circular cover. see if the nut underneath is loose. If it is, make sure the wipers are all the way down and align the drivers wiper and tighten the nut.Regards,Neil

Driver side wiper is loose. How can i fix it?

you need to pull back the cover and expose the 13mm-15mm bolt that holds down the wiper arm and tighten it, if that doesn't work think about getting a new wiper arm from your local parts store or the dealership.

03 Taurus wiper problem

What I would suggest you do is the following:

1) Remove the driver side wiper (arm & blade).
2) Start the car and turn on the wipers.
3) When the passenger wiper is straight up and down .. turn off the car. This leaves the wiper in position.
4) Re-install the drivers side wiper and put it back on so its position is the same as the passenger - making them parallel

Start the car and test

Driver side wiper

Hey, most cars have different lengths. The drivers side is usually the longer or the two, even if the car was meant to have two 28" you can get shorter ones, they will work just fine, just be sure they are as long a possible with out them hitting or going over the window.

How that help
