You have the old school check engine light, which you turn your key without cranking fully on off three times it will give two digit codes separated by pause ending in five five meaning end of codes.
You can go to Advance Auto parts or Auto Zone and they will check the code for free. They can give you an idea from the code as what might be causing it.If the code comes and goes, It probably will probably not strand you. Robert
sounds like it's in default(2nd gear only) try key on engine off, press accelator fully four times ,this should clear the code then try it again,if it resets you will have to get the code. Turn the key on-off-on-off-on and count the flashes of the check engine light ,for example 3 flashes then a pause then 2 flashes would be code 32.
What fault codes do you have? to check for fault codes using the check engine light blink method do the following, turn the key to run and then off, then to run and then off, then to run and watch the check engine light, count the blinks, there will be a pause and then more blinks, that is the code(s) So lets say it blinks 2 times and then 5 times, that is code 25. Google the code or codes under the heading: "Dodge OBD1 fault codes"
turn the key on,off,on,off,on,the check engine light will flash the codes. For instanse code 34 would be 3 flashes,a pause ,then 4 flashes. Will always have a 55 code because the engine is not running.
in order to get the trouble codes from your car you will need to either get an obd 1 reader from a local parts store or you can take it to any garage to have read.
Make sure your coolant levels are up. If not, it may be the problem. The coolant sensor is reading inappropriate figures & sending incorrect timing figures to the computer. Change the coolant sensor & make sure your air filter is clean. The coolant sensor is close to the thermostat housing. Good luck!
Turn key to on, then off, then on, then off, then on & leave it on, (not start, just to on) then count the number of flashes of check engine light. It will flash, then have a small pause, then flash again. It will be a 2 digit number, for example: 2 flashes, pause, 2 more flashes, will be code 22. 3 flashes, pause, then 5 more flashes would be code 35. When you get 5 flashes, pause, then 5 more, That is code 55 which just means end of message. Get back to us with codes & we'll advise of what to look for.
