Question about 1992 Chrysler Town & Country

1992 Chrysler Town and Country overdrive problem

Had a transmission replaced in my T&C last August. Was getting limp home for awhile until they fixed that with a new computer (mostly; still happens rarely). But, cannot get tranny to stay in OD for more than about 6-7 seconds and only one time per start-up. Tired of runaround from tranny guys. Any ideas where I should be looking?

Start testing speed and position sensors regardless of where they are. Electronic transmissions are sensitive to any of them.

you need to have the trouble codes read go to autozone they can read them for you and write them down and report back it is most likley a speed sensor on the transmission there is two of them and they are very cheap and easy to change called input /output speed sensors

P1694 means the battery has been disconnected in the last 50 starts. It could also show up perhaps if the battery is dying or providing low voltage. It can also indicate that the computer memory was cleared in the last 50 starts. Its typically just a status indicator and I would not expect it go into limp home mode unless there is a problem with the battery and its not able to supply the necessary power to engine components.

I found 4 of the codes. Two of em say you have a pressure sensor error, one says shift solenoid A, and one says gear 1 incorrect ratio. We can ignore the gear ratio one. I bet the issue is either an oil leak, bad shift solenoid, or both.

if you had someone put in the engine they should have reset the computers-its not transmission in limp mode its your engine and the computers have to be flashed to the engine most shops dont have the software to flash or reprogram the computers as to the transmission same if you put the engine you can ask a dealer what options you have, to get the computers reprogrammed

Ah, I see. You want to outsmart the computer? Right logic, wrong computer. I think the problem is not in the transmission, but it is the engine computer that has communicated with the transmission computer and put the car in limp-in mode. The fix engine light is sent from the engine computer, and this is the main computer in the car, the main drive train computer, if you will.
The short answer is yes it will reset, by just unhooking the battery. Won't do any harm. Start it up about an hour later, and be sure and let it warm up to normal operating temperature (closed loop) before you take it out for a test drive. Otherwise you may be miles from home in 2nd gear limp-in mode again.
The real fix is to talk to your car...like communicate with the computer and get those trouble codes read...talk to it nice, not the abrupt tone of the glaring idiot light, and maybe it will respond in a kinder, gentler easy to fix diagnostic code!!!!

Transmission will shift properly and then it wont shift it stays on first i have disconnet and connect battery cables for it to shift


Sounds like you have a transmission problem.
The reason it's stuck in 1st or 2nd is the computer goes into "limp home mode" allowing you to get the vehicle to a service center to get it repaired.
By disconnecting the battery you reset the computer and your transmission works until it senses the problem again and goes into limp home mode again
Get your trans serviced

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...


Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Any time the transmission goes into the limp mode, it generates an error code that tells what caused it to go into limp mode. It could be something as simple as a loose connection on a sensor for the transmission computer. The code would explain which sensor was sending the correct signal.
By restarting the car you are resetting the transmission computer, clearing the limp condition.

Limp home mode


You need to scan for engine trouble codes. Most parts stores will do this for free, and tell you what they mean and make recommendations on what to do. The 'limp mode' kicks in to prevent damage to the vehicle when the computer gets data that something is wrong.. When you shut it off, it's temporarily reset, but then the cars computer is signaling there is still a problem, and it goes back into limp mode. Replaced trans, now car is stuck in limp in mode


MCARTER859: check the connections where the transmission harness and engine room harness come together. Unplug them and reconnect them I have run into more than one case with the same symptoms as yours which ended up being nothing more than poor connections.

Most likely your mechanic is right. The reason it will shift normally for a little while is because when it does detect the problem it goes into a limp home mode. When you reset the battery it takes it out of limp home mode until it sees the problem again.

1887 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 6 cylinder....computer replaced twice, sensors replaced 4 time, the problem still exists. Engine goes to crawl (maybe computer is in limp fail safe) sticks in low gear....


Went to the Zone and got them to analyze the engine and get the codes.

Speedmeter filling around.......replaced sensor on transmission
Engine acts like it doesn't have fuel....... Seafoamed the throttle body and made sure the carbon on sides and flapper valve was removed. replaced manifold sensor.

Turned the key off and on 5 times to reset the check engine light.

All this fixed for $62 dollars. Fixed it in the parking lot.

Runs great. Now I don't know how long it will last but I know the Seafoam in the throttle body scrub bit really makes thing right about once a month. Also adding gas additives every other tank full to keep fuel injectors clean.
