Question about 2006 Hummer H3

1 Answer

2006 Hummer H3 intermittenly wont start. Have to wait 10 minutes then it will start. Read online taht replaceing the "ignition switch" would fix the problem. Tried that, now it wont start even after waiting the 10 minutes. Put the old "ignition switch" back on and would crank but no start. Waited 10 minutes and was able to start. Im running now but I would like to fix this problem.

I would like to try to replace the ingition switch with the new one I ordered to see if that will fix this issue. When I put the new sensor on it appears the vehicle does not recognize it and stays in passlock mode until I put the old faulty sensor back on. Is there a procedure for "keying" the new sensor after installation?

Hi, my research on this issue has turned up phantom causes as sticking valves, ignition switch and seat movement.
On some Hummer, it turns out to be sticky valves in the head. GM replaced the head under warranty and the hummer haven't had any more trouble out of it. There is a recall for the 2006/2007 5 cylinder models and you should be able to have this taken care of at no cost.
Do you have a remote start? The H3 Bypass module has an issue with Remote Start. When this happens to you must wait 10 full minutes before trying to start it again (DONT USE REMOTE, USE THE KEY) the bypass module takes 10 minutes to get out of "theft mode" this is in your manual as well, I forgot what page. The only way to get this to full proof work is to get a shop to "OLD SCHOOL" wire around the bypass module.

Concerning the new ignition switch, you have to see the dealer to help you key in the new sensor after installation....

2006 H3 engine will not start periodically

It might be the Starter Safety Switch which prevents the car from starting while in gear. Try jiggling the shifter while in Park, or put it in Neutral and try it.

2006 Hummer H3 fails to start periodically

If you look in the owner's manual it will explain this. Happened to me a bunch of times, really embarassing. It is an additional anti-theft device . If the computer senses that the key is inserted improperly, or that it is not a perfect match for the code it has in its memory for your key, it shuts of the gas supply to your engine for approx. 10 minutes to defer theft. Still happens to me intermittently. Now only very rarely. Total pain. I cleaned my key..carefully, with WD40 and after drying put just a touch of graphite on the key and started the beast a number of times. My dealer didn't read the manual either. You must wait the full ten minutes before trying to restart....otherwise it never totally resets and (the first time this happened to me) you can sit there and fight it forever.

I don't have my owner'smanual handy to refer you directly to the proper pages, but its in there under theft deterent. Hope this helps......and that Hummer can provide aneasy fix for this.
