Hi, I have an Opel Astra 1.6IE 1996 model My car lacks power, I have to rev it all the way and drop the clutch to pull away when parked uphill and the it only pulls away slowly. It has been checked for timing, diesel in my tank, it is recently serviced, it does not smoke, no strange noises and the clutch is not slipping. Any ideas what might be the problem?

Power comes from the pistons ability to push the crankshaft around. If you are loosing power then I would do a compression check and see if it's up to standard. You can loose compression thru the rings, valves, and head gasket. This is what I would check first.

Thanks, I had it at a mechanic and he says that the compression is fine. I have read something about an EGR Valve that might be stuck. Any ideas what that is?

Problem solved, the key on the crnk is worn out and also the pulley on the crank that the cambelt runs on. They say I need a new crank.

I don't believe it is a problem with the clutch, because the revs doesn't go up when i am trying to pull away, it sounds like it is going to stall.

  • Jonah Oneal Nov 10, 2010

sound like problem could be in injection pump.it will cause power lost.

  • lemmerm Nov 11, 2010

Thanx, I will take it for diagnostics test, mabey they can find the problem

What is a problem my opel corsa lite 1.4 2006 model rev high when im stoping at the roboot or stop sign even if im not moving after i start rev go high to 200 and it drop down and up again

As long as the idle air control valve is working, ( I assume this is what you replaced, I would first check to make sure it is operating correctly), If it is, then Id begin searching for a vacuum leak

Revs go up to 3000rpm and down again

run the fault codes as what you have done may not be the problem at all

My bighorn lotus 1994 3.2 petrol revs really high before it accelerates. also when i go uphill and put my foot flat the cat almost cuts out

the high revs on pulling away is a front clutch going on the gearbox which i assume is a automatic ,as for the lack of power going uphill could be anything from a dirty pick up gauze filter in the fuel tank which is collecting rust and muck when the tank tilts ,or even a plastic bag ,to a mass air flow sensor ,you will need to ask a local mechanic on this one ,but the gearbox overhaul?' might be cheaper to trade it in
