2004 Chevy Cavalier with manual 5 speed transmission, 131,780 miles. Driving the car under power, the rpm went up and then the car had no power to the drive wheels. I pulled over into an empty parking lot thinking that the clutch had gone out. While in the parking lot trying to diagnois the problem. When i put the car into any gear, including reverse, the speedometer was reading a MPH but the car did not have any power to the drive wheels. What could this be?
I just replaced both axles today. After I picked it up from the shop not five miles down the roads the above happened. I am thinking maybe the syncros might have failed inside the transmission. It sounds like the alternator is going bad. I reccommend pulling the alternator and having it checked out, most auto stores do this as a free service. There could also be another problem on the rpm thing but I would start with alternator and inspect all other pulleys that the belt rides with. Good luck.
Does it shake when you're going fast? If that's the case then have the wheel balanced. If the wheel is unbalanced it will shake during high speed driving. Try to check the underchassis bushings too. If you have worn out bushings issues like this can occur.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
either you have a fuel pump that went out, or your fuel pump relay went. These fuel pumps last around 100,000 miles, so if you're way under that, it's more than likely the relay, if you're close to that, it could be either.
my friend is selling a 1997 z24 chevy calvalier manual with 148,000 miles. should i buy it for 200,dollars. its looks ok and runs ok what should i be looking out for before i buy it.?
There is a fill plug on the side of the trans, fill it to just below that plug hole. Make sure you use the correct fluid, consult the dealer for that info.
here are two switches that are the usual causes of the cruise kicking
out. they are both under the dash. One is the switch for the brake
lamps (stop light switch). the other is for the clutch if you have a
manual transmission.
if you follow the brake pedal up under the dash you'll find two
switches at the top of the pedal. (it may be one switch but I think its
two). the top one would be for the cruise control. if the switch is
loose it will cause the cruise control to think you're stepping on the
brake and that will disengage the cruise control
same with the clutch pedal if you have a manual transmission; if the
switch is loose it will indicate you are pushing the clutch pedal in
and cause the cruise to kick out
other than that you'll have to check all of the connectors. If it does
engage then the fuses and actuators should be good and it would be a
loose connector or switch that's kicking it out
also, i assume your speedometer works; if its not then that's your problem as the cruise won't engage under 30 mph
