Open Question

Some times hard to start, rpm low idle than before. stalls sometimes when driving jerks before it stats to stall then stop car and have to rev to 3 or 4 thousand rpms then idle willstabalize but still low. Feels like the battery wont keep a charge for only a cirtain amount of time or its the alternator going bad. But my trunk leaks water when it rains very hard and i noticed that the battery has and or had water sloshing around bottom of battery not on cables. Checked cables and they are tightly secured. just confused on what it is.

SOURCE: car idles low, stalls after start

Common issue at the shop (i'm a ford technician), here is what I do to correct it.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

near the throttle body there is an adjusting screw(flat head) for air fuel mixture, it's on a deep cavity sometimes with a cover, adjust counterclockwise will increase the idle.

SOURCE: when it rains water in in the rear sloshing

The 1997 Sebring convertible has rocker panels (the metal that goes from front to back wheel well and directly under the doors) that have five drain channels each.  The sloshing noise occurs when the drain holes plug up and a rocker panel fills up with water.  Often, the water will then leak into the right rear footwell, soaking the carpet.  A quick fix is to locate the drain holes and run a flat (unused) twistem-tie (they come with your trash bags) through each hole several times.  Commonly, doing so will result in a deluge of water, along with spider web parts, leaf parts, and whatever else washed into the rocker panel fromo the rear window.

To find the drain holes, just 1) lie under the car with a flashlight, or 2) sit alongside the car with one of those mirrors that come on a telescoping stick.  Since I don't like to lie in dirty water, I use the mirror to guide my twistem-tie (or ice pick or spring wire or whatever) into each hole.  NOTE:  the drain holes are flat and run at a 30 degree angle from back to front on the right side and from front to back on the left side.

SOURCE: 99 volkswagen passat starts, then stalls, won't keep idle

I am having a similar problem on a 2003 Volkswagon Passat 1.8L 4 cylinder manual engine. My batter (after 10 years of service) died about a month ago. When the engine is cold and I start it up the engine (if I do not carefully add gas to rev the engine) will idle at around 200 to 400 RPM and then stall. The problem does not occur after the engine has been going for more than about 90 seconds. No check engine light is on. Ideas anyone?

there is a sensor that will increase engine revs when turning at slow speed , i expect this is the issue, to check get the OBD codes read to confirm

Stalling issue?


This sounds like the idle control valve or stepper motor as it's sometimes called needing a good clean out or replacement. When faulty this would cause all the symptoms you are describing.

Why does my car jerk when i change the transmission from park to drive


the idle RPM is too high
or its just too cold,
how cold is it outdoors?
idle speeds cold can be about 1500 RPM/ cold.
and will ****.
it jerks because you are taking 0 torque from engine
and the sending that to a stalled rear axle.
this cause a ****, that is why the park lock out requires Brakes on
so yo dont run over things.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
