You need to take the battery and have it load tested.

SOURCE: 96 NISSAN MAXIMA SHUTS OFF UPON DECELLERATION OR WHEN STOPPED

Check to see if the floor on the passanger side is wet. If so, than your A/C drain clogged up and your ECM/computer got flodded by water causing all sorts of funky stuff happening. Right next to the gas pedal is a small cover attached to the computer. It has a clip in it. Remove the clip and tug on the cover. Look at the top of the computer to see if its rusted up. Remove the other side cover also, which is on passanger side floor next to your left foot(if you sitting in passenger seat). and check other side of ECM/computer. Check the ECM for rust on top.
If ALL of that looks OK, than I would replace the switch,(since you are telling me that the key got VERY hot) that is mounted on the back of the ignition cylinder. Its a white round switch that failes after a while especially car beeing 1996, just think about how many times that ignition has been turned ON/OFF since 1996. The mechanism in the switch failes, causing starting issues and funky electrical issues.
Does the car have a remote starter installed?? Or didi it have one in the past?? I have seen companies that install them cause some damage to the harnesses on the switch that is mounted to the back of the igniton cylinder. They use "scotch locks" to connect the remote starter and after a while the connection corrode and cause problems too.
Anyways, check the computer for rust first. Than I would install that switch on back of the igniton. You can buy the switch seperately. You dont need the whole ignition assembly/switch only. Switch is pretty cheap (approx $50 ?). Try that and post results. I would feel pretty good about the switch beeing faulty. I have ssen them fail in the past and that's where your power comes into for the starter circuit.(key getting HOT, switch shorting out, making the key hot and starting the car without the key)

The "buzzing noise"; I can tell that I am not alone in having this problem but has someone figured out ... I fit does, that eliminates the brake rotors, tires, wheelbearings, CV's etc. ... BUT with an Altima it is probable the pre-cats. Loud humming noise when driving

Nissan maxima keyless entry problem. vehicle will

sounds to me like you need a new ignition switch. not the ignition in which you put the key into but the switch that is mounted to the back of the ignition switch. there is a white round switch mounted to the back of the ignition cylinder. I thing it has a problem. so you don't need the while ignition cylinder, but the electrical portion of it only.

I have TPMS on 2009 Nissan Maxima. Can't find where I can check my tire pressure through the TPMS. Manual says I can but I can't find where to. PLEASE HELP!!!

Check the tire pressure at the valve mounted to the wheel. There is a warning light on the instrument cluster to warn of low tire pressure. On a 2009 Maxima, if your warning light comes on check and adjust, if needed, the tire pressures at all 4 wheels. If the pressures were low the light will go out after a short distance. If the light fails to go out take the Maxima to your local Nissan dealer.

My air bag light is flashing. What does that

1. Get in your Pathfinder and CLOSE the door. Turn the key on one click to accessory mode so that all of the other lights on the dash are on but do not start the car. Now open your door and push the the button inside your door jamb that turns your interior light on 7 times. Close your door and then turn your key off.

Now start the Pathfinder...it should be off. If not, repeat this series a couple of times and it will go off. I have had theis happen twice and this is the correct way to fix the problem.

2. Similar story, similar results here too with a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. Got a new stereo installed, and got a bonus with the blinking airbag light on the instrument panel. Got nowhere with the 7x or 10x domelight press-the-switch voodoo. Bounced into this forum and got the fix that works for my SUV. For the 2007 Pathfinder owners out there: You'll notice the ignition key "beep" is heard only 4 times, not 5.

It took a little patience, as this procedure took me 2 attempts. This is a slight modification from the one mentioned above for the Frontier and the Maxima, but this definitely worked for my 2007 Nissan Pathfinder:

1. Key in, ignition turned to on (but don't start truck).
2. Pay attention to the 4 beeps and watch the dash lights. You're looking for the airbag light to go out just after the last beep.
3. As soon as the light goes out (but BEFORE it begins blinking on you) QUICKLY switch the key back to OFF. Don't remove the key yet.
4. After about 2 or 3 seconds, repeat steps 1 - 3. In total you will do this procedure about 3 times. I say "about" because this all took a couple of attempts, but it was at least 3 cycles.
5. After your last cycle, wait about 5 seconds and turn the key to ON again, and just observe the dash for the airbag light. It should go out and stay out. If not, try it again but maybe add an additional cycle.

Like I said, it took me a couple of attempts but it worked. All credit must go to this website, with special thanks to the poster "LB" ( http://www.carsforums.com/nissan/7423-nissan-airbag-light-reset-fix.html#post65692 )

I hope help you with this. Good luck.

Turn the key on and the instrument cluster wont light up or allow it to start push a reset button under hood lever and makes no difference

If the car starts but the instrument panel does not lit, then check ignition, instrument cluster connector and instrument cluster.
If the car also does not start , then check ignition, ignition switch, and wiring.
