If you suspect a malfunctioning ignition coil, check the resistance of primary and secondary windings. Do this when the coil is hot, and again when it is cold. Also measure from the case to each connector. The primary windings should have a very low resistance, typically from a few tenths of an ohm to a few ohms. The secondary windings have a higher resistance, typically in the 10,000 to 13,000 ohm range. To get the actual figures for a specific coil, check the manufacturer's specs. But as a rule of thumb, primary windings range from a few tenths of an ohm to a few ohms, and secondary winding may be 10 ohms or more.

No spark from coil to distrubuter


Disconnect the ignition coil output wire at the distributor cap.
Connect a spark plug to the end of the ignition coil output wire which you just disconnected.
Connect a ground wire to the threaded portion of the spark plug.
Disconnect the ignition coil ground wire from the negative terminal on the coil (Green Wire).
Connect one end of a ground wire to the ignition coil negative terminal.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Tap the other end of the ignition coil ground wire jumper on an good grounding point (for example the battery negative terminal) and look for sparks at the spark plug that correspond to the frequency of your tapping of the ground wire.
If you have a good spark at the spark plug, the ignition coil is good.
If you don't get a good spark, check for approximately 12 VDC from the coil positive terminal (black wire) to ground with the ignition switch in the ON position. You should also get approximately 12 VDC from the coil negative terminal (Green wire) to ground
Ignition Coil Resistance Check

In addition to the test above, you may elect to perform an ignition coil resistance check as confirmation of the coil's condition.

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.

You may have a bad coil or bad ground or wire connection

code p 0353 refers to ignition coil C primary/secondary --circuit malfunction===causes ---wiring--ignition coil---ECM
code p 0354 refers to ignition coil D primary/secondary ---circuit malfunction===causes --wiring---ignition coil---ECM
check harness connections to the coils are clean and tight
replace the coils

What does this mean? The ignition coil or coils are responsible for igniting the air/fuel mixture inside the combustion chambers. Without reliable performance from the ignition coil(s) the vehicle will stumble and misfire.
Code P0351 indicates there's an electrical problem in either the primary ( the computer side ) or the secondary ( the spark plug side ) of the Ignition Coil "A" Circuit.
Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light will illuminate
  • Engine idles rough

check ignition coil see if its getting battery power check black and pink ignition wire going to ignition coil.if you not getting power check the 20AMP ignition fuse.if power going to ignition coil, problem could be bad ignition coil or bad ignition module or pcm problems, best have vechicle code scan for pcm fault or crankshaft position sensor or ignition module fault.

check ignition fuse to coil and check see if power getting to coil if yes ignition coil or ignition module faulty.if no power getting to coil and ignition module more likely you have blowed ignition fuse or faulty wiring from ignition fuse box terminal to the ignition coil and module.

How do you check an automobile Ignition Coil on a 1973 Datsun 240 Z when the ignition coil is't connected to the automobile electrical system? Can this be done? If so please tell me How!!!!!!! THANK YOU...


    1. To check the coil's primary circuit, perform the following:
    1. Make sure that the ignition switch is turned OFF .
    2. Remove the primary wires from the (+) positive and the (-) negative terminals of the coil.
    3. Using an ohmmeter, set it to the 1.0 ohm range, then connect the probes to the primary terminals. The resistance should be 0.84-1.02 ohm's; if not, replace the ignition coil.

    1. To check the coil's secondary circuit, perform the following:
    1. Make sure that the ignition switch is turned OFF .
    2. Remove the coil wire from the center terminal of the coil.
    3. Using an ohmmeter, set it to the 15,000 ohm range, then connect the one probe to the center terminal and the other to the (-) negative terminal. The resistance should be 8,200-12,400 ohms. If not, replace the ignition coil.

    P0354 - Ignition Coil D Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction.

    Description of DTC:
    The ignition signal from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module(ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/OFF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit.

    Symptoms:
    - Lack/Loss of Power
    - The engine may be harder to start
    - Engine hesitation
    - Check Engine Light On
    - No spark

    Possible Causes:
    - Open or short in the ignition coil circuit
    - Ignition coil circuit shorted to ground
    - Ignition coil connector
    - Damaged ignition coil
    - Damaged PCM or ECM

    Possible Solutions:
    - If damage, repair ignition coil circuit
    - Replace ignition coil
    - Replace PCM or ECM



    P0355 - Ignition Coil E Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction.

    p0351 is ignition coil primary circuit this USUALLY means a bad ignition coil use only a name brand coil ,but it could be a bad computer but not very common
