Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

1 Answer

I'm looking for an online diagram of shifter and linkage that shows the springs for possible replacement due to difficulty for my mother to push release button for getting car out of park. it is a 3 speed auto consol shifter which also has cable or linkage to key on steering collumn as button must be pressed to release key from collumn which may have something to do with resistance. i'm looking to replace spring with one with less resistance or possibly replace entire shifter if needed.

Try jiggling the steering wheel to take resistance off of the shifter interlock. the detent in the shifter is a nightmare to work on.

SOURCE: saturn shifter linkage

An easy fix would be to go tothe Junk Yard and pull off the parts you need .......in order to do this though I would advise getting a Haynes Manual (VERY VERY HELPFUL BOOK) for your car...Available at your local Auto parts Store (even if you dont do it yourself you should still get the book...it can save you a lot of time and money when it comes to knowing and working on your vehicle)

SOURCE: 1989 cutlass ciera transmission seems to be

It isn't a speed sensor. In 1989 all GM front drives were hydraulic shift. Do you know if it is a three speed or four speed. The speed sensor in 1989 only controls the speedometer. Also can you describe the problem. Does it just slip? Only certain gears?

Stuck in park what causes it and how do you fix it?

possible causes:
-on a hill without parking brake engaged, causing vehicle to jam into park. This can be fixed by pushing the car rearward while having an assistant shift out of park-with engine off. Be careful, and be prepared to hit the brakes soon as park is disengaged.
-shifter assembly locked in park. Look in owner's manual for park release button. Chances are the shifter assy needs replacing.
-linkage disconnected or shifter cable binding or broken.

Adjust shift indicator 1999 ford ranger

it does sound like a loose transmission shifter

the shift linkage is directly below your auto transmission shifter. simply place in park, undo the bolt joining the shifter to the transmission, push on the transmission shifter at the other end so it clicks fully into park and tighten the bolt up hard. then check for normal operation.

just remember chances are when your pushing down on the shifter to drive that the direction your pushing at the transmission is reversed so park should be towards the rear of the vehicle and drive is towards the front. but may not always be the case. best bet is to get a mate to move the shifter up and down untill you see exactly what is going on, then adjust your linkage to suit.

1996 saab 900s wont shift into reverse gear on a manual transmission

I assume you have owned this car for a while and now how to get into reverse. this problem may be due to worn shifter or bushings to linkage for ****** or shifter, and last may be an internal trans problem. you will need to do some checking . have some one help you as you move the shifter and look for play in the shifter arm or linkage, good day.

1964 c20 chevy p/u 3spd on the column .the shifter gets hung up in 1st and/or reverse when trying to shift to 3rd/4th any pictures available on line @ no cost that shows and tells steering column...

the older column shifters can be a problem, look at where the shifter arms hook to the transmission
there should be some plastic bushings on the end of each arm that nay be worn out and cause this problemtry replacing these bushings first when they are worn they won't align the shifter arms to lighn up for the next gear and the trans will have a tendency to hang between gears

1992 dodge dynasty shifter stuck

It may be stuck due to pressure from being parked on a hill. If that is the case get help to push the car up the hill releaving the presure and the shifter should move. Note someone has to try moving the shifter while the car is held pushed up the hill. If a hill or incline is not the probllem, go under the hood and disconnect the shift cable. With the cable disconnected try to shift the car at trans. Use help so car doesn't roll when checking. If you can move the shift linkage at trans, try moving the shifter. If it doesn't move the shift cable will need replaced. To double check this also disconnect the cable at the other end and try to move the shifter, it should move. That confirms the cable is bad.

I had difficulty with my key in my 98 sl1 too but I discovered that I just had to push on the shifter until you hear it click, then you could jimmy the key a bit to get it out.

Shifter Problem

there are a few solutions possible.  i have recently had shifter problems, too...

Okay, so, the parts inside and around the shaft of the shifter are almost all plastic.  If you shift too hard, they break easily.  These are easy repairs, for an auto repair shop, but i would recommend that you take it to a transmission specialist to have it done properly.     There is also a part called a "gear linkage," if this part is damaged, the linkages fall out of place, the shifter will get off track.  Linkage systems can get a bit expensive, though.
When i had this problem, i took it to a repair shop, and a washer had fallen off, they had to screw it back on and the whole thing cost $50.
