Now it just will not start. It's was taking longer and longer to start. I tested the starter and replaced it. Now after a few (5-10 turns of the key) it turns over but wont engage and actually start. Even after and during a jump. I checked my fuses and they all look good. I'm lost. I have gas. It was running the other day and died twice on the road then my wife drove it to work the next day fine, came home for lunch and it is dead where it sits. I know the starter was bad but it's new now. When I was hooked to the truck that gave me a jump I thought for sure it was going to start. It started to shake like the enging really wanted to start alas nothing. Any ideas?

The ignition switch may be fouled. not where the key goes, but the switch doesn't slide correctly. when you turn key it doesn't contact properly, or hit a bump when driving, it shorts engine electricity, fuel pump, spark, etc...when it does start, the switch sometimes binds, it doesn't disengage the starter motor and burns it up.

I would take the starter out and have it bench tested to verify if it has gone bad in the mean time.

Check the battery for bad connections and also for a full charge.

Check that the battery connections are clean and shiny and new looking when removed from the battery.

How old is the battery? 3 years is a typical life of most batteries sold and installed in cars these days. If unsure, then try a new one from the store which is fully charged to test, or connect a battery charger to your existing battery to see if it will take a charge.

Trickle charge your battery for up to 3 days to get a full charge on it.

Good luck on this repair.

yah thats what I did took the starter out had it tested then bought a new one and put it in. I will try to get a full charge on the battery it shouldn't need replacing I got it 8 months ago. Connections looked good, tight and clean although I'm sure they could be cleaner. Im try that too.

I have a 89 cutlass with a 2.8L motor when I try rn the key the car is not turning at all. what can cause that?

Bad starter, for one thing. It could be quite a few things, but you have to start somewhere. Do you hear a click from under the hood when you turn the key to start? If you do, and you know your battery is not run way down, then most likely the starter motor has failed and needs replaced.
If you don't hear a click or any noise from the engine with the key turned to start, it still could be a bad starter, but could also be a few other things. Always good to have things tested, especially when it is a free service at nearly all parts stores. Unfortunately, you have to take the starter off and bring it into the store for testing. So you would have to get handy with some wrenches and tools, or have a friend take it off for you. A salvage yard could sell you a starter for your car at about half the price of a new or reconditioned starter from a parts store.

Could be three things, battery, alternator or starter,Autozone will test them on your engine for free, takes only a few minutes, but the starter has to be test off the engine,if your able to drive it,go there first.

When you turn the key and it makes the tick, does it ever turn over at all? If not and it only ticks then it is most likely your starter. You can also test your battery at a local autozone, oreilley, napa, etc. and they can tell you if the battery is the problem. Also if you remove the starter they can typically test them also if you desire.

The first thing to do is get a "load test" on the battery to make sure it is good. A battery can look good on a voltage test but not be able to perform. A fully charged battery should read 14.2 V or so. If it drops to around 11.5V on the load test it should be replaced especially if it doesn't bounce back to 14V.
When you hook the second battery into the system, if your key is on then your starter is using 24V to try to start. The starter and solenoid are bad. If your key is off then the most likely culprit would be the power cable from the battery to the starter and probably the solenoid.Replace the cable and make sure that you clean all the wire connections to bare shiny metal. Poor contact can also create problems If you still have trouble change the starter and solenoid both because you usually have to take the starter off a few months later to change it too, if you just do the solenoid. Hope this helps.

Lots of power from battery, however starter clicks and will not turn engine over

Possible worn spot on the armature within the starter. Have someone turn the key to crank, and hit the starter with a hammer with medium effort, if the motor starts cranking after a few hits, it's just a bad starter and should be replaced. Also, if you can take the starter out, take it to an Autozone and they can test it on a bench tester.

2 possible things, 1. the contacts in the solinoid on the starter are bad, it would still test good but wouldnt have enouph power to engage the flywheel, replace starter, or 2. bad flywheel, teeth on flywheel are worn or broken, both require removal of starter, remove starter first inspect flywheel for damage, if none replace starter.

this is caused by a worn starter, a test can be done when its acting up, all you need is a test light and test for power to the small wire on the starter while someone hold the key in the crank postion if that wire has power then the starter is bad, this is very common it will get to a point where it wont start at all it will start taking longer and longer to start. replace the starter. hope this helps.

1995 Cavalier Z24 Car Wont Start

You either have a bad solenoid on your starter OR a bad ignition switch as these are the only two things that can cause the symptom you describe... I lean to the solenoid first, RARELY does an ignition switch sieze up in the start position but it is a possibility. Several national chain parts stores can test the starter for you (GM starters have the starter solenoid mounted directly to the starter and you need to remove the starter to get to it, so you would take the whole unit in to test it... REMEMBER to disconnect the battery first!)
