You will need the Ford tool designed especially for those fittings. Most parts stores carry these in the Help section or in the miscellaneous tools area. They usually come as a complete set for all hose and fitting sizes
Number 1 is on the drivers side on the front. The cylinders are arranged 1-3-5-7 down the drivers side and 2-4-6-8 down the passengers side. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
It sounds like when you had the trans service don't he didn't do something right. He might have put the wrong fluid in. Does the trans make noise? Sounds like the trans is going in your truck.
WOW. You want to put a 3.9 ltr V6 from a 2001 Dakota into a 1998 Dakota with a 2.5 ltr 4 cylinder? And you want to keep the manual trans? Have you considered what you will be using for a fuel and engine managment system? If you have a wrecked truck as a host vehicle then the changover may work. But it will take patience and a lot of work. I don't think the 4 cylinder trans will bolt up but I am not sure - never tried that. However that light duty trans will probably not handle the torque for very long even if it did bolt up. Your local Auto Salvage Yard will have a changeover guide and be able to tell you if that trans will fit either engine. My recommendation is to swap everthing and change that 98 to a 01, auto trans and everything.
Good Luck
Let me know how it goes?
