I'm having the exact same problem. It comes and goes. When the spedo is working and the odomoter comes back it shifts fine. When it's not it slams the gears. I'm guessing that there is something in the speedomotor that tells the trans when to shift. If I replace the speedomotor will it fix the problem?

I have the same symptoms... fuse 8 (Cargo Light/Speedometer Memory) keeps blowing intermittantly.  Replace fuse and things return to normal, fuse lasts sometimes a long while sometimes blows same day.

Speedometer not working and shifting hard into gears, replaced speed sensor. Put new gears in the rear end so I need to check the ring gear for the speed sensor.

with the 93+ models Ive recently found that the safety neutral switch (right where vacuum shift module normally is) could be the cause for it shifting into neutral or not shifting why going down the road

Ford taurus 1993 transmission electrical sensor how many are them

There are two sensors. The speedometer cable has a speed sensor, and there's a turbine speed sensor on the drivers side of the trans case. There are also shift solenoids inside the trans attached to the valve body.

Not shifting into drive

Look into the speedometer issue. The pcm won't shift the transmission right without the speed input. Check the vehicle speed sensor. Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive?

Speedometer doesn't work and transmission wont shift

Hi, make sure you check the speed cable that runs to the engine, it may be severed. As for the tranny, you have some major gear problems that will require pulling this transmission for a deeper look. i would have a look at the transmission filter as well.
