The check engine light means that something is out of specifications on one of the sensors.
For instance, if the throttle position sensor was bad, then the light would go on indicating that it was getting a signal inconsistant with expected data in the computer.
I would have the car scanned with an OBD-II Scanner that can give a code that tells what system to look at.
OBD-II Scanners work on cars 1996 and up so yours should have that system.
One can get a scanner from Sears or Walmart for under $100 that can do this for you.
Or, one can go to Autozone or Advance Auto and get it scanned for free, for driveability issues.
