thanks to all for suggestions. the fuel system had been checked, plugs were new, and wires. turned out the O2 sensor on exhaust
manifold needed replacing. car started and ran great after replacement.

Since your "check engine" light is on you can get a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys. They can sell you a part and may have a diagram about where it fits. Just speculating it may be a coolant temperature sensor.

It sounds like you are not getting into the Cold Start mode.

Code 44 means that the oxygen sensor is signaling the computer that the fuel mixture is bad - too rich or too lean.

Take your car to Auto Zone and have then run a FREE SCAN to your computer in your car. If something comes up that is wrong they will tell you what is needed. If nothing comes up have them clear the codes from your cars computer

Check your transmission and clutch.

check timing/timing chain. Change plugs and wires. Change fuel filter. Check fuel pressure.
