Yep that a one that will let the job down - the seal can go - what age and has the mix been kept with glycol and inhibitor as water will erode material.
Hard to see where water is comeing from as it leaks from around the shaft behind the pully.
Quite an easy fix which is no real emergency so long as you keep topping up radiator.
Check out replacement or recon existing, the price of some water pumps new replacement makes time and parts spent on repair far too expensive.
On the larger older diesels i have experiece of - the water pump would go whilst working in the day then cause bearing failure which would allow the fan blade to carve up the radiator.
Cost then would escalate, radiator, fan blades, water pump and if you were really unlucky some of the surrounding bits. All good fun

Good luck Owen

I think my water pump is out. How would I know

could be the water pump but I would be looking for a larger leak, like a radiator hose, radiator tank split
most water pumps leak a slow dribble and then mostly when running
have a pressure test done on the cooling system to find the exact location of the leak

Antifreeze leak

The hoses could seem ok but have tiny cracks in them that you can't see if they were not replaced. With antifreeze the flange the hose goes on could be rusting from antifreeze and cutting the hose. Cut the end of the hose past the clamp mark if there is enough slack. and put back on. The clamp could either be too tight and cutting the hose on the metal flange or not tight enough. Squeeze the hose and if you see cracking in the hose replace it. Also, if you over fill it it could be a problem or you got a bad radiator. If it is a tiny leak in the radiator you can use radiator stop leak. http://picsbox.biz/key/radiator%20leak%20sealant. Check all the hoses and clamps and make sure the belt on the water pump is ok too. Good luck. They are a great car and worth the effort especially if you havea V6.

How do I fix this coolant leak?

This could be a hose or a radiator leak.

And antifreeze is supposed to be bright green or pink for a car of that age. Brown is never a good color for antifreeze--it means car was run with too little antifreeze for a significant period of time and the block and water pump has rusted internally. This is not a threat to the engine block, but it will kill the water pump eventually.

Find the leak, and take appropriate action--if it's a hose, you can replace that yourself and save $. If it's the radiator or even heater core (not likely), it's a trip to the shop for sure, unless you are able to handle the degree of difficulty that goes along with replacing a radiator (about 6-7 on a 10-scale, and usually a major hassle). A radiator shop can fix the leak, saving you new radiator $.

if is a slow leak and you don't hear a load hissing is ok! replace any hose that you think needs replacement, on top of that check your radiator hoses for swelling ,if the car is leaking water each time you drive the car your risking the engine to blow a head gasket so I would fix the problem right away....

How to check for leaks of antifreeze/in 97 expedition smell of antifreeze

Hi Sharlene,so you smell antifreeze.Raise your hood and check your antifreeze over flow container, you should have a l and a h mark on it,high and low.If low, then it's leaking somewhere, look at the radiator cap and overflow hose for leak, look at over flow container for leak from hose going to it from radiator, look all over engine, look at top and bottom radiator hoses and clamps for leaks,if leaking there, tighten clamp with flat head screw driver,if no leak is found, get under vehicle and see if any antifreeze is visible, maybe water pump, look on ground for leak and follow, check floor board on driver side, heater core could be bad, check hoses going to heater core from engine firewall.

You should look under the car after it sits a while and see if there is antifreeze on the ground. If so try to see where it could be leaking under the hood directly over the puddle. You could have a leaking water pump. If so there would be dampness under the right side of engine compartment. Also check the radiator hoses at front of car.

2002 kia rio 1.5, every time i drive the car i need to put about a quart of water in the radiator and fill the tank next to it. no water under the car. No water in the oil or trans. i cant find any leaks....

The water seems to leak out when the engine is running and so it is important to hve the test done when the engine idles.
So fill up and lett it idle to checck if the fault appears.
It is possible that the radiator has got a microscopic leak and is steams out at some stage for sure.
Once confirmed you wilI have to get teh radiator checked with a pressure test. check the bandages of the hose to water pump/engine.
Also the last point if the engine is heating up to oerflow off when it is running and at stops.

it could easily be burning the antifreeze through a bad head gasket. if when warmed up the upper hose is quite stiff indicating the system is under pressureand you shut it off, even waiting until the radiator fan comes on and then right away turning of the key, wait and see iff anything runs out.the water pump would have to be looked at from below while the leak is ocuuring= reason must mechanics suffer a lot of burns. or with a sall extendable saft mirror. you could also loose antifreeze from a heater core leak but that would give a lot of steam on your windshield inside in the cold weather,or the carpet would be wet inside the car

Leaking antifreeze

Check your hoses entering your block and radiator. you may need to bring your vehicle into a garage and ask for a "Pressure Test" this will indicate if you have a crack or leak.
Good Luck.
