Car starts but wont stay running, starts missing and shuts off. Youcan pedal the car and keep it running sometimes but seems to start missing, and dark colored smoke will come from tailpipe. Ran fine yesterday morning then started all of this. Put a new fuel pump and filter on the car today, but not fix the problem.

If your vehicle is fuel injected I would say you have a blown fuel regulator. This would cause excess fuel into the cylinders (flooding) causing a miss and coughing and also blow fuel into the air breather. If will also cause the vehicle to run poorly and could cause the vehicle to stall. Also to much fuel on startup can flood the cylinders and cause the vehicle to no start.
fuel injected cars cannot vapor lock, so not the issue, when they replaced the fuel tank did they replace fuel pump? It should have been, but 2 things come to mind, they pinched wires when putting tank in and it shorts sporadically shutting off pump, look around with light and trace wires looking for any breaks in plastic coating, or fuel pump is failing.
I have had this happen with the Jeep 4.0 motors because the rubber hoses going to the metal intake from the valve covers had cracks or were broken. Its been a while sine I've been under the hood of a 4.0 but that is a good place to start.
Not positive but sounds like coil pack. There is a liquid coolant in em and if it gets a crack in it then it over heats easy. So after it gets hot it stops working. Then it cools back down and works right. Just basing this on other cars I have worked on. Some have two wires per coil. When it starts running bad pull one of the wires off and seee if it runs the same or worse. And if it is the coil you should be able to trace down the one that is bad. Just trying to help.
Hi and welcome to Fixya! As a first course of action, have the car be diagnosed. A scan tool can help, it will list the faulty codes and by then you'll know the fix.
does it stay running if you give it gas? start it with a little pressure on the pedal and keep it revved. release the pedal. if it shuts off, replace the idle air control valve/motor
