I have a 1994 metro 3 speed auto. Veh has 48,000 miles. Trans fluid has been change. Problem is that some times you have to put the shifter in low to pull off, because it is in high gear. You then shift to secend then high. The change is smooth. After the veh is driven a while it will change into first on it's own. Now when the weather is rainy you need to do the shifting manually no matter how long you drive. NEED SOME ADVICE. THANK YOU

I think you have a mechanical issue with the transmission and it will need to be rebuilt.

SOURCE: no reverse sometimes geo metro a/t

The accelator cable is "Y" shaped. one side goes to the carb and the other to the tranmission. If you have the carb.side too tight it will give you the problem that you are having.

SOURCE: auto trans will shift some times and manual only

It may be just the vehicle speed sensor. Does the speedometer work OK? The vehicle speed sensor tells the computer how to control the shifting and it also sends a signal to the speedometer. Is the trany full of fluid, is it fairly clean? It should be red. Most vehicles, you check the fluid with the engine idling, in park.

SOURCE: I have a 1990 Geo

The car is almost23 yr's old and may have never had the tranny flouid and filter changed. this is where i would start befor replacing tranny. This will cost you around $75 but may save you $1500 on a rebuilt tranny. best of luck to you.

When was the last transmission fluid ATF and transmission filter change?

The recommended interval is 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Is the ATF color a lite pink color or it's DARK RED?

Any burn smell?

Do the old fashion drop the trans pan and filter change.

DO NOT GO TO shop that use a machine to flush your automatic transmission.

====

Most Metro automatic can go up to 140,000 miles before needing a rebuilt.

If the ATF is in lite pink and it's not burn then the most likely cause are

1)lock up torque converter is not functioning

2)transmission filter is clogged

Linkage shifter adjusted/fix

If you have no reverse, you have a problem. Try changing the trans filter and fluid. While the trans pan is off for filter change, add a bottle of Lucas trans conditioner to the pan before reinstalling the pan. Refill with correct fluid to correct level. That's your cheapest bet. Trans needs service every 60,000 miles

1994 BMW 540i does quick, short, unexpected downshifts

Dear sea_lion42, Friday 2-20-2009 11:22pm EST (USA)

Check your transmission fluid which is usually done with the engine warm and running!
If the tran fluid is low add some Lucas Trans Fluid from your local auto parts store!
The knock makes me believe your low on trans fluid!

1998 SUNFIRE GT TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

There are 3 transmissions that could be in your car,the 3 speed auto and 4 speed auto overdrive, and of course the manual 5 speed. The 3 speed is designated the 3T40,the 4 speed auto is the 4T40E trans. To check the fluid level, first, the car has to be warmed up to at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The car has to be raised in the air,as there is a steel plug in the trans case that has to be removed to check the fluid level. The plug takes an 11 mm or 7/16" socket or wrench and is located on the passenger side of the trans case, near where the passenger side axle engages into the trans. The procedure is to warm the car up to at least 100 degrees, engage the shifter into each gear selection pausing for about 5 seconds in each gear, then remove the plug.If fluid drips out,it is full.If no fluid drips out,add fluid through the top of the trans after removing the red plastic cap,and make sure to use a long funnel to avoid a mess.Add fluid until it drips out the hole. When done, replace the plug and cap.Just a note,a transmission does not "use" fluid like an engine uses oil.If you have to add fluid, that means there is a leak that needs to be repaired.Good luck
