Question about 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

1987 Merc Grand Marquis, saving as "collector" car, last ran 6 months ago. Will start, run for 3-10 seconds, then runs out of gas and stalls. Will not start again unless sits for 15 miutes or so. It is apparently a fuel problem. Had a few gallons of gas in tank with Stabil when stored, I just added 5 gallons fresh gas, can of gasoline moisture remover and can of carburetor/fuel injector cleaner. If I turn key past "on" almost to "start" I can hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds then it quits. It will do this in succession as many times as you turn the key. Removing schrader valve on fuel rail and attaching hose, fuel pump will keep running when turned past "on" and pump about a cup of fuel every 15 seconds. In-tank pump and filter were replaced 3 years/500 miles ago. Tried reading codes... there are no codes. A crummy mouse got into the inside of the car (not the engine compartment) as well as the trunk, finally died there after nibbling on everything he could. Any suggestions? reply [email protected]

You need to attach a pressure gauge to the schrader valve and measure the fuel pressure with the key on and also while running. You need to see about 40 lbs in both cases.

So you have power there, why not try a little whap with rubber hammer near it while key on to see if it will do anything. I;d try it just to see if it will come back to life.

The starter is probably just hung up, I would recommend that you gently tap on it with a rubber mallet, or the wooden end of a hammer.
