I had this problem on my 2003 s500 mercedes. On some other models / years, there may a manual release right below the D on the shifter. If there isn't a manual release, then this is what you must do. While pulling the shifter out of part, hit the top of the shifter with the other hand. This works 9 out of 10 times. If the shifter is really tight, you will have to use a mallet (rubber hammer) to hit the top of the shifter. Note: If you have the push start on the shifter knob, you should pull the knob out so that you will not damage it. Hard to believe it, but that's what the mechanic did. BTW, the problem was with a break sensor wich cost me onle $50.
