How to remove rear axle in a grand marquis?
It really would help to know the model, make, and year, because a front wheel drive care tends to have a simple pair of tapered bearing that are installed in the brake drum or rotor, while a rear wheel drive vehicles can have very different bearings that need press work, depending on if the suspension is independent or solid axle.
Its for a 1976 jeep cj5
The 1976 jeep cj5 uses a solid rear axle that is fairly standard for light duty such as cars.
Drain the gear oil. After removing the drum, and then using a puller to remove the hub (when you see a tapered axle and a woodruf key, it is always a tight fit requiring a puller), there is a bearing retainer cap held on with 4 bolts, and I believe you then just use a slide hammer to pull out the axle and bearing. I believe the seal goes into the retainer cap. Some vehicles also require removing the cover on the pumpkin, so that you can remove an axle retainer clip in the differential, but I don't believe the cj5 has that. Once the axle is removed, I believe the bearing has to be pressed off and on the axle.
The bearing is pressed on the axle at the shop, and you press it into the differential tube with the 4 bolts on the retaining plate.
Refill gear oil.

the outer bearings can be driven in using a suitable Very Large socket. Removing the old ones either requires a puller or a cutting torch. I use either depending on the state of the bearings.
when driving new ones in, make sure
To answer the other question, yes you do have to remove the driveshaft to replace the oil seal. the Diff ack-plate has to be removed, the locking horseshoes from the ends of the driveshaft, & the wheels. It takes about 1 hour to remove them & clean the backplate. about another to reassemble.
I charge about $140 plus parts
SOURCE: Replaced rear axle pinion bearing and seal, need
There is no torque specs, this nut has to be tightened back like it was ,the best thing to do,was,to late now,is to use a torque wrench to remove the nut,and remember the torque, and when replacing it,torque it back to that spec, the reason being, there is a crush sleeve between the front pion bearing ,and the rear pinion bearing, and it has to be crushed to a certain amount,to aquire deepness into the ring gear, anyway just give it about 25 lbs torque, any more the crush sleeve will crush even more and the deepness of the pinion will be too much.

Both of my rear axel seals are leaking on my 2001 Jeep Lorado. I am preparing to repair the seals thisweekend but before I do, I need to know the appropriate steps in doind so. My main concern is the ABS. Will I have to disconnect the ABS gears at all?
