Idle control, only controls idle, it will not cause no power, and that code could have set, due to no engine power, check fuel filter that it's not clog, could have good fuel pressure, but under load not getting enough gas, also check timing belt, if it jump a tooth, will cause no power, here's a figures so you can check timing belt.I have a 1997 Geo Metro 1.3L that starts but has - 3d3d9e0.gif

a clogged cat converter will cause no power on acceleration. Hook up a vacuum tester to intake and start car. If vacuum slowly drops then your exhaust may be clogged up.

When engine gets hot, idle is up and down with the engine light on. OBD code gives a P0505 code.

per this address "http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/" p0505 is a "IAC (Idle Air Control) System Malfunction" it gives some good suggestions to look at to find a solution for your problem.

When i start my 1997 Geo Metro, it often sputters

Try this
Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
