There is a symbol that lights up on my dash in between the mileage and the gear readouts it looks like a tranie or a motor, but i do not have a manual for my car and so do not know what the symbol means

The gas cap is either not on or improperly installed, remove the cap and reinstall it until it clicks when tightening. Read your owner's manual, the info is in there. If the light still stays on replace the gas cap.

This sounds like an issue with the body control module.

NOBODY HAS HAD A SOLUTION TO THE WRENCH LIGHT PROBLEM....I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS A 2006 INTERNATIONAL DIESEL 6.0 ROLL OFF WRECKER.....HE HAS HAD SEVERAL PEOPLE LOOK AT IT AND NOBODY HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT....EVERYBODY ANSWERING THIS QUESTION ON HERE SAYS READ THE CODES....IS THERE ANY REAL MECHANICS OUT THERE...TRUCKS & CARS BOTH HAVE THE WRENCH LIGHT ON THE DASH...THE ONLY THING THAT MAY HAVE MADE SINCE ON HERE {BUT I DON'T THINK SO UNTIL I CHECK THE TRANY FLUID ON THE ROLL OFF } SOMEONE ON HERE SAID TRANY FLUID IS LOW....I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT YET BUT I AM OPENED MINDED...3 DIFFERENT PEOPLE PLUGGED IN A SCAN TOOL ON THE TRK. The ecm would not cause this, it sounds like someone did a poor rebuild, if the engining is reving and the car doesnt what to go then the clutches may be bad, a mass are flow would not cause a trany to go bad, the flashing hold light is a problem but should not be happening after the trany was just rebuilt, something is not right here, the trany was just rebuilt and now the hold light flashes and the motor rev going into 2nd gear, that trany has problems a bad ecm wouuldnt cause this slipping reving problem you are having , i would have a trany shop check to see if that trany was really rebuit.

You will need to look at the top of the trany and see if the linkage is moving or if the cable is moving to determine the problem, look under the dash while moving the shifter to see if the bracket under the dash thats bolted to column come loose, if it did not then look at trany to see if the linkage came apart at trany.

auto tranys look somewhat like a jet engine with blades that a pushed by trany fluid. In 3rd or fourth gear these BANDS are damaged. looks like a trany overhaul.

did you check the fuses under the hood in engine compartment? if you did the next thing would be the neutral safty switch,its located on top of trany,heres a diagram to show you where its located and what it looks like. hope this helps.

It is registering, but the light is burned out. You can probably use a flashlight on it and see a faint glow of numbers, but you just need a new bulb. Your radio is probably only half lit on the readout, too. Common problem with Pontiac sunfires. Dashbulbs. Cheap fix, but time consuming.

you need to replace the dash cluster, their failure is common at about 10 years of age
