Question about 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2001 silverado starter turns but wont engage the fly wheel, should i use shims on the starter? if so, where?

The pinion will get engaged only if the starter motor gets a good momentum as the pinion will get tot he extreme end to be connected to the flywheel. No shim is required but to get the starter motor cleaned. clean the brushes, the commutator so that the motor energises with good momentum.
Use light grease on the pinion groove and the spiral track.

The problem seems to be with the solenoid on the starter motor that is why it is not engaging the flywheel. Please contact the nearest workshop as it can be repaired.

Couple possibilities. Was the starter just replaced? If so. Were their any shims (small metal pieces) that were not put back? They space the starter so the bendix and gear can align with fly wheel.. secondly could be a bad starter, broke bendix. Bad gear..or third missing teeth on either fly wheel or starter..

most common issue is the starter is aligned properly, this can be fixed by shiming the starter ( most replacement starters come with shims, if not you should be able to get them from your parts store)

the next most likely issue is worn drive gears on the starter or fly wheel

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

Starter for 1998 silverado

what size motor? 4.3? V8? The starter 4.3 is located on the passengers side on the bottom side of the motor. First disconnect the battery. , Look at the new starter and locate old one. Undo the nuts on the old starter. There should be 2-3 small wires all together on one terminal. Take them off. Take the larger nut off and take power cable off. Unbolt the 2 bolts holding the starter onto the block, pull old starter out. At this point have a look to make sure that the old starter doesn't have shims inbetween the starter and block. Some starters need a shim so that it lines up to the fly wheel. You may or may not need to replace these. My rule of thumb is that if they are there , use them again. Rebolt starter the opposite of removal. When you start the engine up, if you hear a loud grinding, or a winding noise and motor doesn't turn over, then you may have to put shims in. there is a starter relay that may be sticking, keeping the starter engaged. And also not letting it start.

Installing a starter for a 1998 bonneville...Have replaced battery and starter but when starter engages gets jammed on fly wheel and doesnt turn. Shimmed and still doesnt turn

first check to see if motor will turn over put socket on bolt on crankshaft pulley if motor doesn't turn over u have a seized motor
if it does turn over than i remove tranny and check to make sure flywheel is bent or cracked

I have a 2000 chevy 1500 and i changed out the fly wheel and starter because of grinding noise and i was still having the same problem after i did that so i added shims on the bolts and now it wont start...

If you changed the starter with one that came off of a newer style engine,or if you got an aftermarket starter than the problem is likely to be that the bolts have bottomed out due to a narrower mounting pad on the starter.Remove all the shims and either get shorter bolts or add washer to the ones you have to make it tight to the block,been there,done that!

you need a shim, if its screaming your clearance is to great. Are you positive its the right starter?
