After about 6 to 7 years all the ignition coils fail
Keep diagnosing the cylinder misfire issues
Need professional scan tool software, to use Mode $06,
& look at other data, as your not going to get a perfect
fault code every time & just replace a failed part
There are times when professional tools won't work & you
have to walk a new coil or use a scope on a road test & that
could take months before the coil goes down
How about the spark plugs ?
Over 3 years old ? loose them
when a car goes into fail safe or limp mode it is caused by an inportaint sensor the car needs to either run the motor or shift the trans..ikt then runs or operates on the driving info that the ecu has stored to be able to get it home or to a shop..youj will need to have a diagnostics ran on it and have the cars computer read to retrieve the code to idenify the problem and once the problem componet is replaced the car will automaticly return to normal operation
This just happened to me. I drove the beetle in the snow and slid up to a stop sign. The slide engaged the anti-lock brakes. After that, the car was sluggish starting out and would not shift into 4th gear.
Turns out, the transmission was stuck in 3rd gear. If you can believe it, this is by design! It's a fail safe mode that gets triggered by the wheels spinning out of sync.
According to my mechanic there are wheel speed sensors on each wheel. If the computer senses the wheels moving at different speeds it will drop into fail safe mode. This requires a special scan tool to clear the codes.
Once the codes were cleared, ran like new.

I encountered the same problem, my engine fail safe mode light came on and shut the car down. I took my car to my mechanic and he found the solution to the problem. The car needed a throttle body cleaning and the fuel filter needed to be replaced. After having my truck serviced my mileage increased from 14.6 mpg to 15.4 mpg
ENGINE FAILED SAFE MODE WARNING LIGHT, GONE Total cost $86.45
po303 is misfire on number 3 cylinder. It could be a bad spark plug or wire, maybe a loose plug wire, could be alot of things. injector problem drop of water in fuel that happened to hit that cylinder. but most likely a plug misfired. I would clear the code and see if it happens again. If so give care a tune up.
