There is a front differential actuator on the side of the front axle housing .. select 4x4 inside the cab and check for 12 volts with a test light at the plug for the actuator. If you have power and ground when in 4x4 the actuator has failed ( common ) . If there is no power it is possible they did no plug everything back in on transfercase and left a harness unplugged or damaged. Let me know what you find and I can help further.
Good luck.

I had the same problem with my 97 Silverado. I'm sure the problem is your front axle actuator motor. This is a common problem and I'm sure your local parts store will have it in stock. It's fairly easy to change if you don't mind getting dirty. Just be careful when disconnecting the electrical connector, they are easily broken if you manhandle them. Hope this helps!
