Hi,
REMOVAL
Always remove the ignition coil assembly by grasping at the spark plug boot, turning the assembly 1/2 turn and pulling straight back in a steady motion.

  • Prior to removing the spark plug, spray compressed air around the coil area and spark plug.
  • Remove electrical connector from ignition coil.
On 3.5L engines, it is necessary to loosen the screws by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the screws.
  • Remove 2 fasteners from ignition coil.
  • Remove ignition coil assembly.
  • Remove the spark plug using a quality socket with a rubber or foam insert.
  • Inspect the spark plug condition.
INSTALLATION
Always remove the ignition coil assembly by grasping at the spark plug boot, turning the assembly 1/2 turn and pulling straight back in a steady motion.
  • To avoid cross threading, start the spark plug into the cylinder head by hand.
  • 3.5L engines tighten spark plugs to 28 N·m (20 ft. lbs.) torque, 2.7L engine tighten spark plugs to 17.6 N·m (13 ft. lbs.).
  • Install ignition coil assembly onto spark plug.
  • Install coil screws and tighten: 2.7L engine to 6.2 N·m (55 in. lbs.), 3.5L engines to 6.7 N·m (60 in. lbs.).
  • Connect the electrical connector.

if you don t see any spark plug wires then your motor has coil packs(black colored boxwith 2 small electrical wires) located on top of motor 3 on one side,3 on the other.disconnect negative terminal on battery, then disconnect wire connector at each coil pack and remove 2 screws that hold down coil pack, pull gently straight up and plug is right there below coil pack

I have a 98 dodge intrepid with a 2.7. My car would run fine at times and then all of a sudden start to miss badly and the valves would rattle. The mechanic changed the cam shaft sensor and now it runs very well.

Changing Spark Plugs

First off, on this model you don't have plug wires, you have coil packs with a boot and coil connected to the pack. The boot slides on the tops of the spark plug. The good thing about this is that you don't have to mark each wire to its location.

So to replace the plugs you need to disconnect the electrical connector to the coil pack and then unbolt the two bolts that mount the pack down, then remove the pack.

Next with a ratchet, an extension and a special spark plug socket, which has an insulator inside to protect the porcelain from getting cracked, remove the spark plugs.

Next step is to replace the plug, usually I slide off the boot from the coil pack and then remove the coil from inside the boot and slide the boot over the spark plug and start to thread the plug back in. Using this method allows to you feel if you are threading the plug in right. Then with a torque wrench you would torque the spark plug to the specs for the type of engine you have.

3.2/3.5L Engine (20 ft-lbs)
2.7L Engine (13 ft-lbs)

Next reinstall the coil pack with the two mounting bolts, it is only necessary to hand tigthen the two bolts. Then plug back in the electrical connector and continue this process on the next 5 spark plugs.

Changing Dome Light

To remove the map light bulbs you need to first remove the overhead console.

To do this you need to remove the screw at the front of the overhead console (which is more towards the front windshield).

Next you need to pry down on the rear of the overhead console and then disconnect the electrical connectors.

Then, with the overhead console pulled down, pull of the map light bulbholders and replace the bulbs.

Installation is the reverse of the removal process.

How do i replace spark plugs

The spark plugs for the intrepid are fortunately easy to access. There are 6 wires that go to locations next to the valve covers on both side of the engine. pull those wires off one at a time, pulling out the spark plug after each wire. go through normal spark plug procedure for the rest. good luck!

My 1998 Dodge Intrepid is starting & then stalling only after a few seconds. The engine light came on, & the code was P1391. Any ideas?

That code is indicating an intermittant crank shaft or cam shaft sensor fault. Because the engine is starting then stalling, check to see if you have spark after the stall. If spark is still present, you are probobley looking at a cam sensor circuit issue. The cam sensor controls the fuel injector pulse. If the cam sensor fails on a chrysler product, the fuel injectors will not function.

But www.autozone.com will want you to register at the site (free) to access their vehicle repair guide database.
Your info: Dodge Intrepid 3.3L MFI (multi-port fuel injected) 6cyl
Spark plug gap: 0.048in - 0.053in (1.2mm - 1.3mm)
Torque Spark Plug to: 20 Ft-Lb. (28 Nm)
Replace interval for spark plugs: 30,000mi.

Note: on the 3.3L engine the (6) plugs are under the valve cover.
on the 3.5L engine, the (6) plugs are on the valve cover.

Check engine light flashing

if the check engine light flashes than the pcm has detected a mis-fire with enough severity to cause catalyst damage.

you should have the vehicle scanned to fnd out which cylinder is mis-firing,

most likely cause is faulty spark plugs or spark plug wires.

good luck

Need to change spark plugs in 2000 intrepid.

First you have to remove the coils in the center of the valve covers. Each plug should have one with a boot on it. Unscrew the plug out and replace with a new plug. Be sure to make sure the gap is correct. Gap measurements should be on the label in the engine compartment usually located on the underside of the hood. After you replace the plugs then replace the coils back.
