I have a 1996 Ford F-150 with a 4.9L v6-300 engine, when i turn on the ignition, i can hear the fuel pump turn on but it's not turning on. First time i turned it on, it drove for a bit but then it turned off, i tried turning it on again but it wouldn't start. I left it alone for an hour or so and it turned off, but after 5 minutes it turned off and now it doesn't want to start at all. I can still hear the fuel pump turn on but it's just not starting. What can be causing this? Can it be the fuel pressure regulator?

If you hear the relay click, but no pressure at all then it would be the fuel pump needing replacement

SOURCE: Ford Escort 1998 fuel pump not working.

good old ford lol, try looking at the crank sensor its located at the front of the engine tucked in right hand side of exhaust manifold and gearbox, two pin plug, i have also known these to have no end of faults with the fusebox.
easy to remove, and solder the connections inside they all suffer eventually, if your not to handy with cars i recommend taking to a auto electrician, easy if you know how. Good luck Davelee

SOURCE: 1991 Ford F-250 (again!) 4.9 liter, dual tanks.

try resetting the inertia switch located on drivers side way up under the dash, with a red button on top, maybe you kick it or hit the body hard enough to kick it off, also check the fuel pump relay under the hood drivers side ,i think brown and black relay box over wheel( inner fender)..and check the fuse, and new fuseable link

Testimonial: "Inertia switch it was! Thank you very much!! Excellent service."

Check the fuel pump relay. It's located in the relay box under the hood on the drivers side.

Why won't my car start?

try getting in a position to kick the fuel tank, as the fuel pump as someone turns the key in PARK as the fuel pump may be stuck, if that fails, troubleshoot the ignition. if kicking jars it to pump, check wiring or replace fuel pump.

G ot a 1996 cavalier turns over but dont start when i turn ignition on i dont hear the fuel pump cycle an its not firing

Well, no.
The ignition system would not affect the fuel pump circuit.
I would suggest you check the fuel pump relay first and see if it has power and a ground signal from the computer.
Do you get a check engine light when you turn the key switch on ?

Won't start after running out of gas

However, your problem is most likely in your fuel injection system. When you turn your ignition to 'ON' you should hear your fuel pump come on. If you do, you may only need to turn your ignition OFF/ON a few times for the fuel system to pump gas back to your engine. If you do not hear it come on, your fuel pump may need to be replaced. It'll need to be checked by someone with enough information to make an accurate diagnosis.

I ran out of gas then i put gas in the car .now it want start .1996 camaro v6 3800 rs

You may have to "cycle" the ignition switch a few times to get fuel up to the fuel rails. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position (do not start yet). Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump running. If you can hear it, turn the key of and wait about 15 seconds and turn the key to the RUN position again. Repeat this step one more time, the turn the ignition to START.

If you cannot hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on, then you most likely lost your fuel pump when you ran out of gas. This is pretty common - especially if the fuel pump has a lot of miles on it. If this is the case, then you will have to replace your fuel pump.

It sounds more like the fuel pump to me, if you don't hear the pump when you turn the ignition to the on position, that's the problem, check to make sure the fuse and the fuel pump relay are still good before you change the pump.

I have no power to the fuel pump on my 1996 TBird. Where is the fuse for the fuel pump located.

Do this test first. With the drivers door opened in a nice quite area turn the ignition key to the ON position without starting the engine. You should hear the fuel pump operating for 5 seconds which is priming fuel to the engine. If not heard the engines oil pressure sensor is at fault. The third wire from this sensor links to the fuel pump to prime. When the engine reaches normal operation oil pressure range the computer shuts off that circuit and turns on the fuel pump relay for the pump to run. That relay stays on until you shut the engine off

Engine will not start. can hear fuel pump cycle

If you hear the pump, that is a very good sign. You can check the fuel rail test port for pressure. It is like a tire valve but on the fuel rail, just put rag on top and press the valve in. If there is good pressure then your problem is a bad crank shaft position sensor most likely. This sensor provides spark to ignition module, then to coil packs, plugs & wires. You can test the crank sensor with an ohmmeter to see if it has a good strong continuity reading.

One place to start,  Spark to ignition and power fuel are two different sources.  Unless they both work off the same fuse.  The fuel pump needs power to run the fuel pump, Ignition needs spark to fire the engine. Check your fuses because in my opinion it is odd that they both went out at same time.  Good Luck
