Hi, My friend has a 1997 lumina and did not pass inspection due to her brake light but it has to do with the turning signal. Is there a website that has instructions how to replace or resolve the problem in order for her to pass inspection?

YEP TO FIX BRAKE LIGHTS YOU HAVE TO REPLACE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH BECAUSE MY 98 LUMINA DID THE SAME THING.YOUR BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AND TURN SIGNAL SWITCH SHARE THE SAME ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT.

No brake lights or turn signals on 1997 chevy lumina

Check the fuses..If ok ,,then most likely the signal switch..Your brake light circuit runs through the signal switch as well..Get someone to watch your brake lights to see if they come on..Now push the brake down and move your signal switch around and see if the brake light comes on intermittently..If so its definetly your switch

I have changed my brake switch, fuses, and bulbs in my 1997 chevy lumina and the brake lights still will not work at all, my signal lights only work. What could be the problem?

here is howw it goes, the power from the fuse goes to the brake switch then to the signal light switch and from there to the rear lights, test for signal from the brake switch to the turn signal, if good the signal switch is bad

1997 Lumina turn signals don't work passenger brake light doesn't work

check the turn signal relay and the fuse, and for the bake light your bulb might be bad because the fuse for the brake lights works for both. not just one. if the bulb is not bad check the wiring. it's an older car so it may have corroded wires

1997 Chevrolet Lumina : upper brakelight (window) works, lower brakelights don't work. Changed bulbs and fuse-no go. Most logical theory so far is that they are on seperate circuits, the lower lights run...

Will your Center High-Mount Stop Light (CHMSL) illuminate when you depress the brake pedal, but the lower/outer lights will not?
-- Do you have to hold the signal lever in a certain spot to get the turn signals to flash?
-- Do you have to hold the signal lever in a certain spot to get the lower/outer brake lights to illuminate?
-- Will the signals work in one direction, but not the other?
If you answered yes to any of the preceeding questions, your turn signal switch is likely malfunctioning.

**One more question before we continue: Is the turn signal lever not "cancelling" (returning to the "off" position) after you make a turn? If this is the case, you have a broken "cancelling spring."

Before you begin disassembly of your steering column, verify the turn signal flasher is not malfunctioning. If your brake lights work fine, but not the signals (either direction,) then it's likely the flasher is burnt out. The flasher itself is located underneath the dash near where the steering column passes through the firewall

REAR TURN SIGNALS WORK BUT MY BRAKE LIGHTS DONT

Replace the turn signal switch. If you want to prove this have someone stand behind the car with your foot on the brake. Then wiggle the turn signal lever. The brake lights should blink. This is a real common problem with W body. I have replaced two on my cutlass plus tons more at my shop.

98 lumina brake lights and rear turn signals stopped working.

A flasher would not cause this problem, It's in the trun signal switch, it needs to be replaced
