1997 oldsmobile 88 brakes taking more pressure to engage. was sitting at a light gently pressing on the pedal when they apparently lost pressure. brakes still work but have to press almost all the way to the floor. after that happened a few minutes later the emergency brake light came on even though i rarely use it and know for sure it was not on. any help would be appreciated.

I appreciate the advice I have gotten so far. i went out and tried pumping the brakes but noticed nothing different. I did notice when I pump the brakes quickly that the pedal becomes more firm but quickly goes back to the way it was if I just press it down and hold. Also noticed there is no brake fluid at all anymore now although it was full earlier. Also noticed what I am guessing is brake fluid on the ground just behind the right front tire. It's too dark to do much with it now. Going to take the tire off tomorrow and see if it's just a broken line or something I could easily fix as I'm unable to fix it if it's a master cylinder or brake booster, Thanks in advance for any incite.

I don't think that is an 'emergency brake light' but a warning light referring to the problem you are having. If it was only a low fluid level warning, this wouldn't normally affect braking as it has so either the master cylinder has failed or the vacuum brake power booster.
Try (in a safe area) pumping you pedal and note if it rises somewhat. If it does, either master or slave cylinder has blown a seal or the seals are simply worn.
To check the brake booster, with the engine off, press on the brake pedal BEFORE starting and note whether it sinks a bit one the engine has started. If it does, the booster is likely OK.
If neither of these tests prove useful or conclusive and the car is (carefully) drivable, go to one of the chain auto parts stores and request a free scan of your on-board computer for possible stored errors relating to the braking system.

That is the symptom I mentioned but if you have a failed brake line, pumping the brake pedal will only pump the fluid out faster.

If you have no experience with brake systems, find a friend or a trusted mechanic who does since bleeding the brake system once it is too low on fluid (or the system has been opened for service or replacement) is mandatory, otherwise you will have air trapped in the system which will produce spongy pedal feel and possibly inadequate braking performance.

My clutch won't engage 1997 Honda civic

Clutch plate and pressure plate seem to be too weak to pull the car. To test the clutch plate, park the car on flat surface. Pull the hand brake up, start the car, depress the foot brake pedal, depress the clutch pedal, put the car in 1st gear, press the gas pedal and leave the clutch pedal at once, while keeping the brake pedal depressed.
Follow one of the two following statements:
1. Engine does not shut down and remain start. (Clutch plate, pressure plate and clutch bearing defective - Replace all as a set)
2. Engine shuts down. (Clutch system is OK and does not require any repair).

1990 Oldsmobile 88 Royale acceleration and brake problems.

You could have a weak fuel pump causing it not to accelerate to a higher speed. The brakes going to the floor indicates that there may still be air in your brake system, ora bad brake booster not creating the needed vacuum for high velocity braking. The other thing is if you have an EBCM (Electronic brake control module) it could have dirty connections or just be going bad. Hope this helps.

Wat is a brake switch

An electrical switch located on the upper side of the brake pedal arm. It has voltage going to it, and when you depress the brake pedal, the switch closes and let the voltage go to the brake lights. (These switches are adjustable)

Parking brake light comes on when brake not on

Usually this indicates that either the cable is bad, or the rear brakes are not adjusted up so this makes the pedal sit too low on the parking brake (or the hand lever sits too high).
